One of the reasons I wanted to live in the Washington DC area, was access to public transportation, more specifically the Metro aka subway system.
1: Is there a public transit system near where you live?
2: Given a choice do you prefer subway trains, or buses?
3: When you travel do you use local public transit systems?
4: If travel time is the same between driving and public transit, which do you use?
5: Should we put a higher tax on motor vehicle fuel and use the funding to expand public transit access?
My Answers:
1: Is there a public transit system near where you live? I am a ten minute walk from the Huntington Metro Station, the south end of the Yellow line on the DC system.
2: Given a choice do you prefer subway trains, or buses? Trains.
3: When you travel do you use local public transit systems? Yes, often.
4: If travel time is the same between driving and public transit, which do you use? I prefer the train, I can read and not have to deal with traffic.
5: Should we put a higher tax on motor vehicle fuel and use the funding to expand public transit access? This is an easy yes for me, there is good transit here, and I only drive 1,500 miles a year - the price of fuel has little impact on me.

1. Yes, trams pass our front door and major stations are ten minutes away.
ReplyDelete2. Trains, for their speed.
3. Yes, normally an enjoyable part of travel.
4. Definitely train.
5. Yes, but new systems have to be up to scratch and very competitive with driving.
The USA needs truly high speed rail
DeleteIs there a public transit system near where you live? Harrisburg only has buses and trains to cities. I miss Philly.
ReplyDeleteGiven a choice do you prefer subway trains, or buses? Trains.
When you travel do you use local public transit systems? I like to experience some it, yes.
If travel time is the same between driving and public transit, which do you use? Public. When I live in Philly, I used the regional rail all the time. I could relax, no sitting in traffic, and could read or do things on my phone.
Should we put a higher tax on motor vehicle fuel and use the funding to expand public transit access? I'm not sure. In areas where the public transport is almost nonexistent, I'd say no. The gas prices most take a good portion of the budget....but in larger metro areas then I'd say yes...to force people to use the regional transports more. But only if their fee is reasonable and to give a perky for using the public transport. It's why I was very impressed when in Budapest. The prices made everyone want to take public transport and they have one of the lowest % of people owning/using cars. Traffic and jams were almost nonexistent. If public transport fees aren't kept in check, then there is no point in people using it.
Interesting insight into distribution of tax and transit dollars

Nice transit where you live.
Delete1. There is. It is not as robust as the Metro.
ReplyDelete2. Subway
3. Almost always.
4. Public. Travel time is the same, but then there is finding parking and paying for it.
5. I'd say yes, but in 30+ yrs, places like Columbus are STILL debating "light rail". Even if they pulled the trigger today, it wouldn't be built in my lifetime.
If Columbus never starts, they will never finish
Delete1: Is there a public transit system near where you live? God no, South Carolina is decidedly behind the times for anything other than buses.
ReplyDelete2: Given a choice do you prefer subway trains, or buses? Subway.
3: When you travel do you use local public transit systems? We try to; it makes getting around unfamiliar territory a lot smoother.
4: If travel time is the same between driving and public transit, which do you use? Public; I wouldn't need to find parking!
5: Should we put a higher tax on motor vehicle fuel and use the funding to expand public transit access? It might help places that have a good public transit system, but here around Columbia, it'd still be behind the times. We need to bite the bullet and fully fund it and get it done.
We are so far behind most of the western world
