Vestmannaeyjar Is on an Island, off the southeast coast of Iceland, it is about a 40 minute ferry ride from the mainland. Back in 1973 a volcano erupted and destroyed about half of the town. The weather was terrible that long ago night, the fishing fleet was in harbor, facilitating evacuation of the survivors.
1: Would you visit the island?
2: Would you spend the night?
3: Would you live there?
4: On the way out we passed the island in the photo. Would you spend a week in that house?
5: Would you live there?
My answers:
1: Would you visit the island? We did.
2: Would you spend the night? Yes, the hotel was very comfortable.
3: Would you live there? I think it would get very confining - it is kind of small.
4: On the way out we passed the island in the photo. Would you spend a week in that house? A week yes, if I was dropped in and picked up by helicopter, there is no way I am climbing that cliff.
5: Would you live there? Not a chance, to alone.

Wow, the house in the photo -- talk about inaccessible!
ReplyDeleteOne of my grandmothers would have been happy there, far enough from the neighbors.
DeleteWould you visit the island? Hell yes!!!!
ReplyDeleteWould you spend the night? YES!
Would you live there? No...I would get bored eventually.
On the way out we passed the island in the photo. Would you spend a week in that house? Yes, I think that would be cool.
Would you live there? No, well...at least not till I become a monk. Bwhahahhaha!!!!!! so I guess that is a no.
It's very cool there that it is the only house, or is it?...great picture.
It is the only photo on that island, the nearby island is home to 10-20,000 people.
DeleteHere's a first for me, I think. No to all five questions.
ReplyDeleteThere is an airport on the larger island, with 40 mile per hour cross winds, even I wouldn't fly into that one.
DeleteI lean more towards tropical places, with lots of color. This is much to austere for me. Even the picture is depressing.
Delete1: Would you visit the island? I did, back in 1971 when I was a student from the UK and I had a summer job there for a while.
ReplyDelete2: Would you spend the night? I stayed about a week, boarding with someone willing to put me up.
3: Would you live there? No, too isolated and too cold for me
4: On the way out we passed the island in the photo. Would you spend a week in that house? Probably, as long as it was only a week - I'm good with my own company, provided I have a book or two to read. I also love photography, and the photos would be awesome.
5: Would you live there? No - I think my husband, who is a keen gardener, would seriously object to living there! No chance for a garden.
Kind of a limited spectrum of things that will grow in that climate. Geothermal greenhouses are popping up all over Iceland.

ReplyDelete2: Would you spend the night? Yes!
3: Would you live there? No way!
4: On the way out we passed the island in the photo. Would you spend a week in that house? A week might be boring but I'd definitely love to spend a couple of nights.
5: Would you live there? No way.
The isolated house, I have read was built as a hunting retreat.
Delete1. Absolutely.
ReplyDelete2. Big yes.
3. Perhaps. I don't know enough about the place to make an informed decision. I'd have to reconcile that none of my family would visit (yay!), but also few or none of my friends (boo!)
4. A week would be ok.
5. Doubtful. As cut off from world troubles seems advantageous right now, I'm not sure that's the answer either.
Satellite Internet the ultimate remote work location - the last I knew Iceland had a long stay visa for full time remote workers.
Delete1: Would you visit the island? Of course.
ReplyDelete2: Would you spend the night? Why not.
3: Would you live there? Not a chance. I've lived on a much larger island and found it claustrophobic, so this one's out.
4: On the way out we passed the island in the photo. Would you spend a week in that house? I could do a week.
5: Would you live there? If they picked up the house and moved it somewhere less isolated?? Otherwise, it's a hard pass.
On the larger island, we drove around the entire island, every major road including a couple of dead ends, in an afternoon.

Isolation only goes so far for me
