Thursday Ramble: If Only

I saw this and thought, if only we could teach dogs to read.

That leads my brain into the following conversation with myself.  I wonder if all dogs speak the same language? Does language structure the thought process? (probably not.) What if we could codify dog, create a system of notation, and publish books in dog?  Could we read to dogs? Could we teach dogs to read? Maybe we should teach dogs to record their thoughts, so they could be played to other dogs. Imagine a world where dogs have phone conversations with other dogs. Certainly dogs have great stories to tell, maybe they can tell each other where the great smells are at, who has the best treats.  Scientists have tried to decode bees communicating by "dance" or movement to other bees what direction and how far to good sources of nectar.  Certainly dogs must be able to help one another find pleasure or avoid danger. Dogs seem to know who loves them, who to trust, and who to avoid. Maybe dogs are a better judge of character than humans.

Eons of companionship with canines and we don't have a clue.  Maybe dogs understand us and are baffled that we don't understand them.  Poodles undoubtedly think we are the clueless, and that they are superior us.

Yes, sometimes that is what happens in my brain.  So many questions to explore the answers to.

In many ways I am like an old dog, I will respond to almost anything said in a kind tone of voice.  Treats are always appreciated.

  1. Sounds to me like you’re a young dog, too. We always wonder about our cats. Dudo is so very precise and we can always tell what he wants. Certain sounds for certain things. It’s fascinating. Moose just walks around the house talking constantly. He could want attention, a treat, a pet, to play, or he could just want to make sure no one has forgotten he’s there. It would be a riot to actually translate him. Maybe he’s just nattering.

  2. Animals are an interesting thing. Ours, the cats and the dog, are all so different. And they know; they know!
After Max left us, Tuxedo would sit at the end of the hall those first few days waiting for Max to come to breakfast.
Consuelo, is that aloof cat, who really wants nothing to do with people, but when I call her Pretty Baby Girl she comes right to me.
And Ozzo, the dog, is good at directions. If I say 'this way' he goes right, nut if I say 'that way' he goes left.

I think in a very primitive way dogs can communicate. A warning bark is understood, as is a growl. A sniffing of bums or genitals means I feel comfortable with you and I want to know more about you, or not. These are what are obvious to humans but I expect there is a whole lot more that we don't see or know about. Then there are dogs that will fight against each other just on sight. Immediate hatred.

  6. You raise a lot of interesting questions. It would be great to talk to man's best friend. We might learn a lot.

  7. I am deeply, deeply disappointed by this blog post. And a little offended too. Why write about dogs when CATS are a much better topic?

    1. I read someplace that cats most likely think humans are really incompetent cats. I for one am not very good at being a cat. I will make up for this soon.

  9. Cute dog sign. That could be my next photo project in local town! Dogs would probably have a way to communicate via smelling things.

  10. I constantly contemplate what my dog is thinking or feeling and how he sees the world and what he thinks of us. I would love to be able to know and comprehend his thoughts.
