The Saturday Morning Post: Growing Older Happens - Growing Up is Optional

Unashamedly the young boy pulled his pet dinosaur out at the restaurant, and placed it on the table as his family ordered lunch. He politely asked the server to bring a bowl of water for his friend. The innocence of a child, when and why did we lose that, or did we? Can we get it back.

A few years ago Jay and I were checking into a nice hotel with a view of Niagara Falls, Canada. I grabbed Rodney, our stuffed animal Wombat out of the back seat, and tucked him under my arm as we walked in.  The doorman did a double take and said, "this is Canada we have lots of Beavers."  I turned Rodney around and said, "no tail, he is a Wombat," and we both laughed.  Every time I look at Rodney I think, no tail, Wombat not Beaver.

Back in 1999 I took and passed the one and only bar exam I will ever take.  I won't revisit the trauma, but sufficient to say it is something most sane people only want to do once. The exam was 90 miles from home.  After ten weeks of studying 10 hours a day, 70 days in a row, I tried to rest.  I packed and drove over the night before to stay in the hotel the exam was being given in.  The most valuable thing I can do at a time like that is be comfortable and rest. When I unzipped my bag in the hotel room Bob was in there.  Bob is one of our oldest and most loyal penguins.  He is medium in build, the perfect size to comfort you.  I hadn't packed him, either he figured out how to unzip and zip the bag, or he had a little help from a sweet little hamster.  He was a great comfort.  (Little Bob, went to Paris with us for Christmas one year, he is about half the size of Bob.)

Just because the years have passed, doesn't mean I can't enjoy being a little silly along the way.  There is a saying, we don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old when we stop playing.

Have some fun, play a little this weekend, be unashamed, be silly, be young at heart.

  1. Being silly and having a sense of humor is one of the only ways to survive these days toots. Even as down as I can get at times, people always compliment my sense of humor, wicked at times. But I feel good when I can make people laugh and break a mood.

A good friend of mine just took her bar exams. She was STRESSED to say the least.

  2. Being silly and seemingly immature is a great way to survive. Wombat, not beaver. A great catch phrase.

Yes, some silly humour can be very de-stressing.

You've got me wondering if wombats can swim. I really don't know.

  4. When I took my one and only bar exam, in 1990, I stayed across the Bay, at long-time friends' home. They were kind enough to drive me to and from and feed me, for three days. They also left a tiny Rabbit (my totem) candle on the nightstand by my bed. I still have that little Rabbit, along with my memories of kindness and friendship.

  5. Congrats on passing your bar exam the first time! I understand from American lawyer friends that it's very difficult to do. In Canada, we write a series of mini bar exams over the course of our articling year, rather than one huge one at the end. It's more manageable that way, less intense pressure, and fewer people fail. But some still do and have to repeat their articling year.

  6. I enjoy silliness. Friends say i can be child-like and I correct them by saying I'm childish.

  7. We have two plush bears. They on occasion can be found around the house posed in the raunchiest of positions. Balder Half's subtle approach to romance.

    1. I have a five foot tall panda in the back seat of the Convertible. The guy in the pickup truck next to me at a traffic light this morning, shouted "do you know you have a panda in the back seat." I responded, "Oh not again!" We both laughed.

  8. I think you know where I stand on this issue. I have a room full of plush giraffes that comfort me when I'm down, and I always bring one with me to the hospital. In edition, I have some plush bears (of course) camels, pigs, and turtles. And my basement is a veritable toy store. I still love cartoons, coloring, games, and puzzles. If being a grown up means doing without these things, then no thank you.
