The Sunday Five: Gone but not forgotten

This was the last Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, an American chain from the 1960's and 1970s, sadly the last couple of outlets in Cleveland closed sometime in the past year.  It was one of my father's favorites when I was growing up.

4: Name a department or specialty store that is no longer in business? Montgomery Ward

5: If you could bring back one of these, which would it be? Burger Chef had a nice charbroiled flavor.

  1. Name a restaurant that is no longer open? Here it was Gazebo Room, a excellent Greek restaurant that opened in the 30's. It closed in the late 80's and it's renowned salad dressing and marinade of the same name, can still be bought in the local grocery stores, it was that good.

Name a discount store that is no longer in business? Korvettes

Name a car manufacture who is no longer in business? Saturn. I had three of them...and they were excellent cars.

Name a department or specialty store that is no longer in business? I used to be a department store shopper...John Wanamakers, Bonwit Tellers, Henri Bendell, B Altman, Marshall Field's, and numerous specialty stores...there falling like solders at this point.

If you could bring back one of these, which would it be? Hands down Henri Bendell...they had the best smelling candles I'd ever bought. And the store itself was simply amazing..

    2. Ha! As if. My parents had a 1954 Desoto Firedome they bought when I was born. They traded it in for a Rambler station wagon in 1960 when the Kid Brother was born. Desotos were made until 1961. But, thank you. You're very kind.

    1. We found a Big Boy in Indiana last fall on a road trip, and stopped for lunch. There are only a few left in the USA, many in Japan.

  8. I remember going there as a boy and being a bit puzzled as it had no hamburgers as all the other places had. I like fish and chips but now they have to be really good. I suppose if Mr. Treachers was still in business I would be disappointed
