A Hotel Room in a Museum?

My father liked to travel cheap.  We stayed in some funky places over the years.  I was in my teens when my grandfathers died (two months apart.)  The following spring my paternal grandmother and I started traveling together.  She was still spending summers on the farm and winters in Florida (a few years later she stopped going north for the summers.) For three years I drove her back and forth.  On the first trip we stopped at a Holiday Inn, I had never been in one, to fancy for my father.  She picked up a directory and said, "I can't take the money with me, let's enjoy!"  In those days the uniformity of the rooms was amazing.  In later years my father lossend up a little and had a few Hilton nights over the years.

I still use Holiday Inn from time to time, though Hilton and Marriott seem to dominate.  I have already surpassed 45 nights in hotels this year, and the fall is going to be busy.

  2. Ah... I remember those vibrating beds from a road trip to Miami in the ‘60s. My mother wouldn’t let us “waste” our quarters. She also wr8nkled her nose when we entered the room. My father liked to get good deals but didn’t like to lodge on the cheap. My mother was the same... with a vengeance.

  4. I have such fond memories of staying at various Holiday Inns after putting the ball and chai....uh rings on our fingers. Balder Half was the first to take me to a hotel, and restaurants for that matter. I still love going to both. He always said that you could trust H I to have the same quality and inexpensive (comparatively speaking) prices everywhere.

  5. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. It does bring back some great memories for us too. Our dad use to stay at the same place all the time, until we finally got him to go to a newer place for vacation. He at first wasn't happy, but after a day or two you could see he was having a great time. Hope you are having a great day.
