The Sunday Five: Would You Try?

I have a rule, I never eat anything that is trying to eat me at the same time.  Beyond that, I will try almost anything - would you?

1: Sardines, I ordered sardines with lemon at lunch the day this photo was taken, no one wanted a taste, would you?

2: Pork cheeks, the first evening in Madrid I ordered the braised pork cheeks, they were hearty - if a little under salted, would you?

3: One day at lunch in Malaga I ordered fresh anchovies.  They are white in color and very mild, would you?

4: Street fruit, AKA the oranges on the trees? Would you try one?

5: One thing I didn't get to order, and wanted to was arancini aka rice balls.  Would you?

My answers:

1: Sardines, I ordered sardines with lemon at lunch the day this photo was taken, no one wanted a taste, would you?  I did and they were GOOD.

2: Pork Cheeks, the first evening in Madrid I ordered the braised pork cheeks, they were hearty - if a little under salted, would you? I did, and I would again, though we ordered too much food that night.

3: One day at lunch in Malaga I ordered fresh anchovies.  They are white in color and very mild, would you?  Oh they were good, not at all like the salty little worms on a pizza (that I also like.)

4: Street fruit, AKA the oranges on the trees? Would you try one?  I didn't, I asked Mitchell and he said they are bitter oranges and tourists are often seen spitting them out and cussing.

5: One thing I didn't get to order, and wanted to was arancini aka rice balls.  Would you?  I have had them, and love them.  I think the tapas keepers were keeping them for the regulars.

  1. 1. No, I don't want to taste your sardines. Thanks.
    2. I haven't done it but I think of playfully pinching a pig cheek. No.
    3. Nope. I don't do anchovies.
    4. No to such street fruit. But locally grown fruit can be great.
    5. I am old and out of touch. I've heard of arancini and you say they are rice balls. They sound innocuous.
    6. Bring me tapas, lots. Keep it coming with glasses of icy cold wine.

    1. Arancini are often stuffed with cheese, they are breaded and fried.

  2. 1: Sardines, I ordered sardines with lemon at lunch the day this photo was taken, no one wanted a taste, would you? Well, I was one of those no ones! But I do have photos of that meal I’ve yet to post.
2: Pork cheeks, the first evening in Madrid I ordered the braised pork cheeks, they were hearty - if a little under salted, would you? One of SG's favorites. If done well, very tender and delicious. Better for some if they only know they’re pork.
3: One day at lunch in Malaga I ordered fresh anchovies. They are white in color and very mild, would you? Until I moved to Southern Spain, not a chance. Since living here, I discovered they're nothing like what I had in the States (which I loathed).
4: Street fruit, AKA the oranges on the trees? Would you try one? I'm curious to see the answers here and assume you'll fill everyone in.
5: One thing I didn't get to order, and wanted to was arancini aka rice balls. Would you? I love arancini, but have only had them in Italy and at Italian restaurants. I've haven’t yet seen them in the places we go in Spain.

    2. And after wrote my response i remembered you had already answered that those were bitter oranges on the tree. That one brain cell works very hard. Were the arancini in an Italian restaurant in Madrid? I do remember you talking about them.

    3. The tapas bars in Madrid had arancini on the menu, I should have ordered them. I was surprised that a lot of what I thought of Italian or French was really Mediterranean

2: Pork cheeks, the first evening in Madrid I ordered the braised pork cheeks, they were hearty - if a little under salted, would you? I lile pork....but don't think I'd like the cheeks. I only like them on my men!!!!

3: One day at lunch in Malaga I ordered fresh anchovies. They are white in color and very mild, would you? Nope...not a fish person.

4: Street fruit, AKA the oranges on the trees? Would you try one? I might. I love citrus fruit.

5: arancini aka rice balls. Would you? How bad could it be? Yes.

    4. Sure.
    5. I have. They can be good, but the texture is a bit different.

2: Pork cheeks, the first evening in Madrid I ordered the braised pork cheeks, they were hearty - if a little under salted, would you? I haven't had pork cheeks, though I have had veal cheeks, and they were quite good.

3: One day at lunch in Malaga I ordered fresh anchovies. They are white in color and very mild, would you? Again, had them, but it's a pass now.

4: Street fruit, AKA the oranges on the trees? Would you try one? I don't see why not.

  7. 1: Sardines, I ordered sardines with lemon at lunch the day this photo was taken, no one wanted a taste, would you? Yes, I would. I love sardines.

2: Pork cheeks, the first evening in Madrid I ordered the braised pork cheeks, they were hearty - if a little under salted, would you? Sí

3: One day at lunch in Malaga I ordered fresh anchovies. They are white in color and very mild, would you? Oh, yes. We were in an Italian coastal town and ordered an appetizer assortment that included fresh anchovies that were right from the sea to the table. So delicious. When we got back to the US, I asked at the seafood store if they could order fresh anchovies and yes, they could. It would cost A LOT of money.

4: Street fruit, AKA the oranges on the trees? Would you try one? If I didn't know your answer, I would probably try one just because it is a local food.

5: One thing I didn't get to order, and wanted to was arancini aka rice balls. Would you? Yes. Love arancini.

    1. Some fish have a very short shelf life, unless they are preserved, hence what we see as anchovies.

  8. 1. Sardines? I used to love the canned in oil ones. Craved them with strawberry ice cream while pregnant 46 years ago. No such cravings since.
    2. Pork cheeks? From which end of the pig do these cheeks come? Who am I kidding, I eat chitlins so bring on the cheeks!
    3. Anchovies? No. I'm not going to tell you how long I thought anchovies were some form of green onion or chive. Found out the hard way while eating a slice of someone else's pizza. Urp!
    4. Street fruit? No. Much as I love fruit right off of the tree, I don't know who's been touching these and where those hands have been. Okay, somebody had to go there.
    5. Rice balls? Yes. I figure if someone went through all that trouble to individually castrate those poor little grains, I should at least try them. Yeah, I went there too. Sue me.

  9. 1. Yes, I'd try them.
    2. Yes, nothing wrong with pork cheeks.
    3. Absolutely, I love anchovies especially the white ones.
    4. I can usually tell the bitter ones from the eating ones. They decorate with the bitter ones here too.
    5. I hadn't heard of these so I looked it up. Yes, I'd try them.
Good heavens, it looks like I'd eat anything too but that's not true. I do have my limits.
