Travel Tuesday : Sometimes You Just Need to Go Someplace

Reading Mathew McConaughey's bio-book, Greenlights, I was struck that several times in his career, he just took off to travel.  An early mentor told him to go explore and relax.  Another time a wet-dream inspired him go to the Amazon River.

My adult life has largely been too structured to travel spontaneously. I have once or twice. When I was living in Florida I found myself unemployed one summer and hopped in the car and drove to Michigan on kind of a whim.

When traveling with plans, we often encounter things that interrupt our carefully planned trip - a museum that is closed, or a road closed, or a sleepless night.  When that happens just change directions, go another way, do something unexpected.

The sign above, was in the airport in Reykjavik, a trip that was originally planned for Boston, then we went right instead of left.

  2. I am directionally challenged to a degree and that has brought so many unexpected delights in my travels and meanderings. I have always found my way back!

  3. I've never gone on a major spontaneous trip, maybe just an afternoon's drive somewhere. Oh well, I guess that still counts?

  4. One of my favorite solo trips was a drive from Northern California to Southern California, then left to New Mexico, Santa Fe and Taos, north then to Colorado Springs and Denver, then north into Wyoming and Devil's Tower, up into Montana to Billings, Bozeman and Butte, then south into Utah and across the dessert to Reno and then back into California.
To be fair, I had a job interview in Santa Fe ... but the addition of the long road trip made it more fun, even as a solo traveler.

  5. I usually plan a trip ahead of time but many times, once I'm at the new destination, I discover other things that fascinate me so I leave my plans and go in a different direction.

  6. "a wet-dream inspired him go to the Amazon River" uhhh... how the heck? I could make an off-color remark about snakes, but I shall forbear.

    1. His book was weird and fun to read. I do think snakes were involved.

  8. I agree with your sentiment: life is what happens when we're busy making other plans. You can't control the wind, but you can adjust your sails. I bet retirement will just fuel your desire to travel even more. I'm so excited for you, and to live vicariously through your travels.
