The Sunday Five: Technology

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History has a special exhibit on smart phones - and all of the elements that go into making them. In the exhibit was this wall of out of date technologies, you know the things that were new a novel in our lifetime.

1: Do you still own and use a CD player?

2: Do you still have a landline phone?

3: Do you still have a VHS video cassette player? (Extra points if you have a Betta Max machine.)

4: Do you still have a working film camera?

5: Do you wear a wrist watch?

My answers:

1: Do you still own and use a CD player? I have one, it does not get used much.

2: Do you still have a landline phone? Yes, and I prefer to make calls on it.

3: Do you still have a VHS video cassette player? No, and I have a few VHS tapes I should have copied to digital.

4: Do you still have a working film camera? Yes, I haven't used it in a few years, I have a Nikon 35mm.

5: Do you wear a wrist watch? Yes,

Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. 1: Do you still own and use a CD player? Yes - we have two - and still used though rarely.
2: Do you still have a landline phone? Yes. But they are being phased out in Great Britain over the next two years.
3: Do you still have a VHS video cassette player? (Extra points if you have a Betta Max machine.) Nope. Dumped it with the advent of DVD players.
4: Do you still have a working film camera? No. Never had one anyway.
5: Do you wear a wrist watch? Yes. I feel naked without one.

Do you still have a VHS video cassette player? Yes, in a box and never used.

Do you wear a wristwatch? Yes! A huge collection of high end and designer, and el cheapos, with huge faces. The first watch I saved up for was a Gucci watch. I will never have any of those tect watches you can talk in, and I really don't care how many steps I walk either.

    1. There is a collectors cult for the Pentax. I had a Pentax 6x7 - new in about 1977 - sold it a few years later for more than I paid for it. It is worth about five times what I sold it for today.

    1. Someplace in the safe, I have my first watch, a tiny Timex, it must be 60 years old, and a pocket watch that my grandfather bought in a pawn shop in the late 1920's and carried to work for decades.

    1. If the camera works, it may be worth something. Even the better point and shoots are in demand.
