Sunday Five - frozen summer delights

In the works above, is espresso coffee ice-cream.  Milk, cream, egg yolks, sugar, a double espresso, and the strongest coffee allowed in Virginia.   I cooked the cream, eggs and sugar into a light custard, added the coffee, espresso and milk, cooled then froze.  It was the first time I had used the ice-cream maker attachment on the Kitchen Aid mixer.  Hence this weeks Sunday five, frozen summer delights.

1:  Have you ever hand cranked an ice cream maker?
2:  Do you prefer the modern frozen jacket ice cream makers or the traditional ice and salt method?
3: Have you used a machine with an electric freezer jacket?
4: When was the last time (if ever) that you made ice cream at home?
5: Should ice-cream have eggs in it?

My answers:
1:  Have you ever hand cranked an ice cream maker?  Once, at summer camp in my early teens.
2:  Do you prefer the modern frozen jacket ice cream makers or the traditional ice and salt method?  The frozen jacket is so much easier, and cleaner.
3: Have you used a machine with an electric freezer jacket?  Not yet.  Not sure I would use one enough to justify the space.
4: When was the last time (if ever) that you made ice cream at home? 4th of July weekend.
5: Should ice-cream have eggs in it? I am ambivalent on this, Jay is a great fan of "frozen custard." I am not sure I can taste the difference.

Please share your answers in the comments.

Pretty well no to all although I remember making ice cream in a tray and putting it in the freezer to set, but I I forget what went into the tray. I think sweetened condensed milk was one ingredient. It wasn't like proper ice cream though.

    1. An inspired thought, sweetened condensed milk lemon (or lime) juice thicken, I bet that would be good frozen.

  3. Hell, I aint picky.

My dad use to make homemade when he was living....it's all we had, and my aunt still does make hand cranked. I just had ice cream tonight...a three different chocolate...very creamy from Moo Hope. I bought three gallons of different flavors to keep frozen. I like it all. And the new place right around the corner has some great gourmet flavors...bourbon and vanilla...rose petal, African violet, Blueberry, my favorite, and one called Sea Salt with Carmel and vanilla, honey lavender and Kona coffee. Since being home, I have walked over once a week to try a new one. If I keep this up........

  9. 1: no I have not
2: I have the former; we used it earlier this month to make ginger ice cream. it didn't go well. Perhaps as it is just too hot here to make ice cream.

  10. 1: Have you ever hand cranked an ice cream maker? Once at a friends' home after dinner (I was in my 30s). Unheard of when I was a kid. (City people.)
