The condo we live in, is in one of four high rise towers, on about 30 acres of land on a hilltop. The community is fenced, with 24 hour security. The towers are on a flat spot on top of the hill, the land surrounding them is very hilly, with deep ravines and lots of trees. If they would cut some of the trees down I'd have a much better view, but the neighbors are rather attached to the trees, at least one of which dates back to when George Washington visited friends living on the hill top (he had dinner with friends here a week before he died.)
A couple of years ago the association replaced the perimeter fence, upgrading to a taller fence that is hard to climb. We have deer inside the fence. Either they slipped in through the front gate, jumped the 8 foot fence, or slipped in the back gate when the shuttle bus was coming or going. We occasionally see the deer, the deer drive the gardners batty, eating the flowers. I was out for a walk recently, with the camera in tow, looked down into one of the ravines, and she looked back at me. Rare to get a decent photo, the deer tend to be shy and or fast. On my Sunday morning walk, two fawns crossed the drive as I watched.
Getting the deer out of the community is a problem, there are over 2,000 people living on these 30 acres, and we are surrounded by residential neighborhoods, making "hunting" not an option. They called in a professional "trapper" a couple of years ago, who successfully relocated the herd that was here at that time, he had to resort to sedating one with a blow-dart. There was an uproar about that, this year the management seems to be taking a live and let live approach.
Have you tried venison?
I never had deer meat and won't....there is already plenty of other meat to eat. I love deer. I just posted a video of a deer and fawn I filmed. And yes...deer can clear a 9ft fence...Ive seen it here with our fence.
ReplyDeleteI have a sister in law who won't eat anything that was cute, cows are okay, sheep are not. An off rule, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Very interesting. Your own venison supply, haha. I think we only eat farmed deer here, but I don't fancy trying it, and nothing to do with Bambi. An uproar about tranquillising a deer? Absurd.
ReplyDeleteIn this area, you can find someone incensed about almost anything.
DeleteI tried it once, it was ok. I prefer chicken and fish.
ReplyDeletewe have plenty of deer that roam the neighborhood. every year there is a controlled hunt in the large nearby park; the meat is donated to food banks.
Without natural predators, deer easily overpopulate.
DeleteNot a favorite of mine. Had it once, that was enough.
ReplyDeleteWe have deer in our yard quite often. We usually get the hint when the cats run from window to window along the back of the house to get a glimpse.
The cats are protecting you from attack - or wondering if those things would be tasty.
DeleteI live in a rural/suburban area and deer are very commonplace. Murphy, my dog, goes nuts when he sees one. I've tried venison once, never again. I see Bambi's eyes.
ReplyDeleteThe omnivore's dilemma
DeleteOh yes, I've eaten venison. Deer sausages are particularly tasty.
ReplyDeleteI had a reindeer sausage in Anchorage, it was good.
DeleteI find that I am able to divorce the living animal from the meat. Divorce is probably the wrong word, but I can't think of another. I don't see cows, Bambi or any other living thing when I carnivorize. I had venison once. I was about eight or so. My best friend's father hunted deer. He'd skin the thing in his back yard and parcel out the meat. We got a parcel once. I hated the taste so never tried it again. I still don't understand why this man (old guy) had to have heads and hooves hanging on his dark den walls. Those deer eyes followed you everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI'll eat almost anything that does not eat me first. Taxidermy is weird.
DeleteGame meat is not to my liking. And I can't help thinking about Bambi. When we lived in the country in Connecticut, we had our own woods and were surrounded, of course, by more. Deer were regular visitors. You know, if you pee on the shrubs, they won't bother them. (We didn't actually pee; we mixed up a spray from the garden center. It worked for us.)
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention. It DID smell like urine.
ReplyDeleteYupp
DeleteI've had venison chili, and I didn't know it until afterwards. Since I couldn't taste any difference, I guess it was OK. I've also had duck and pheasant before, but that's it for "exotic" game.
ReplyDeleteI have never had wild duck,
