Sunday Five - Do You Remember

Kind of a test of how old are you, do you remember when, this weeks Sunday five.

  1. Do you remember the first time you paid more than $1 per gallon for gas (hmm, how does that convert for those outside of the USA?  1-eruo or 1-GPB per litre?)
  2. 8-Track tape players?
  3. When Richard Nixon resigned as US president?
  4. Tell us about your first visit to a public library?
  5. The first time you saw a Heron?
My Answers:

  1. Do you remember the first time you paid more than $1 per gallon for gas (petrol) (hmm, how does that convert for those outside of the USA?  1-eruo or 1-GPB per litre?) It would have been 1978, a Gulf oil station in Titusville, FL at the corner of US-1 and Knox McRae (there is a bank there now.) The pumps couldn't handle a price over a dollar, so they set them to the price per half-gallon.
  2. 8-Track tape players? I had one in the early 1970's and wanted a recorder - but they went out of date before you knew it.
  3. When Richard Nixon resigned as US president? We were visiting a flying friend of my fathers, I think I cried, while others cheered.
  4. Tell us about your first visit to a public library? It would have been in North Branch, Michigan, probably with my grandmother, the library was above the 5 and Dime store, next to the Pioneer Bank, up a flight of wood stairs, lots of dark wood bookcases, I was probably 5 or 6.
  5. The first time you saw a Heron? There was one that visited the wetlands on the farm when I was a child, my mother was thrilled when it landed in the corner of the yard. (Neat photo of one in flight?)

  1. Do you remember the first time you paid more than $1 per gallon for gas. Nope

8-Track tape players? I think my mother had one but not sure.

When Richard Nixon resigned as US president? Nope. Ford was president then.

Tell us about your first visit to a public library? I don't remember a thing about it, except using the card catalog.

The first time you saw a Heron? Who knows when, but I see them daily at the lake now.

  2. 1. Not specifically, but I remember when gas cost $0.55/gallon.
    2. My dad had the Carpenters (Close to You) on 8 track. It (the tapes and player) seemed so futuristic!
    3. Yes. We were camping and everyone in the campground had their radios on. The woods resounded with the voice of Nixon. Not a good thing.
    4. I was a preschooler attending story hour at our local public library. The librarian read us "The Three Billy Goats Gruff."
    5. I don't remember the first time. But I've seen 'em.

  3. Do you remember the first time you paid more than $1 per gallon for gas? Yes. I remember the gas pumps being converted to be able to display the extra digit. I had a '76 Mazda GLC at the time.
8-Track tape players? Sure. Never owned one, but my mother-in-law did.
When Richard Nixon resigned as US president? Oh, yeah. My roommate was a Republican. We had quite a discussion that night.
Tell us about your first visit to a public library? I went to the library often but have no memory of the very first time. We DID have a book mobile in the suburbs. That was probably my first "library" experience."
The first time you saw a Heron? No idea when that was.

    1. I had an 80's GLC wagon, the only car I regretted parting with, when I bought my first new Accord in 1990. I should have kept the wagon it was so practical.

  4. Do you remember the first time you paid more than $1 per gallon for gas (hmm, how does that convert for those outside of the USA? 1-eruo or 1-GPB per litre?) I do not.I remember being stunned at gas being nearly $1 a gallon cheaper in Smallville than in Miami when we moved here, though.

8-Track tape players? My family had one!

When Richard Nixon resigned as US president? I was a wee queerling but I remember that sweaty forehead.

Tell us about your first visit to a public library? We had a little library up in the trees atop a hill in Fair Oaks, where i grew up. Windows all around. I just remember being inside that building looking out.

The first time you saw a Heron? I was an adult, and was walking along the Bodega Headlands when I saw a Great Blue Heron about ten feet in front of me. He, or she, looked at me; I looked back. And then it suddenly, gently lifted off the ground and was gone.

  6. 1 - in the early 60s, I remember gas was 25 cents/gallon. $1 was probably sometime in the 70s.

2- hell yeah! (music) (clunk) (music). I think todd still has one.

    3 - 1974; I was in college.

4 - again, 60s; I remember our town library was in the basement of the local municipal building. every week, the teacher would walk our class the 2 blocks to the library. I remember the card catalogs too. and the rows of encyclopedias. I still have a library card.

5 - like mitchell, no idea, but I have seen them.

  7. After the "Pix" theater burned, the town took over the building, and moved the "city hall - both rooms of it - the police department - without a jail cell, and the library to the other end of the block. I was never in the theater. We lived three miles out of town, a mile and half past the end of the pavement.

  8. 1) No, but my mother does.

    2) Seen them; never had one or played one.

    3) Sure do. Kennedy was living in DC and he and a group were sipping champagne watching helicopter fly off.

    4) I know I was in grade school, maybe 4th grade or so; red break with wonderfully creaky wooden floors. We pass it going in and out of the center of town.

    5) I believe that's a very rare Chesapeake Flying Penguin.

  9. 1. I have a similar memory of the gas prices. I just remember thinking how outrageous that price felt. I hadn't seen anything yet!
    2. I don't recall having an 8-track player but I know my dad did. I remember thinking it was pretty cool!
    3. I remember when Nixon resigned that it was more of a historical event than anything else. I certainly wasn't as involved with all things political as I am now.
    4. I don't remember the very first time but I do know that I loved going to the library. Our library (Quincy Illinois) was in a very grand old 3 story, grey stone building. I loved everything about it, the grand staircase, the tall stacks and the smell of all those books.
    5. I don't remember seeing a heron until I moved to Arizona which seems very strange since I grew up in a city right on the Mississippi River. Maybe they just stood out more in AZ.

    1. I should so something on moments in history, Nixon, Armstrong, the first shuttle launch, Challenger (I was working in my office, talking to someone on the phone who was watching it through his office window, the call ended with "that's not right, I have to go."

  10. 1. Do you remember the first time you paid more than $1 per gallon for gas? No, but I remember driving across Ohio in 1972 in my first car ('71 VW bug) and gas was maybe 25 cents a gallon. Could it have been that low??
    2. 8-Track tape players? I never owned one but others around me had them.
    3. When Richard Nixon resigned as US president? Oh, yes--1972 was my first time to vote, and I had voted for McGovern. I hated Nixon and cheered when he resigned in 1974. What a crook--just like the one we have now!!!
    4. Tell us about your first visit to a public library? I don't remember the year, but I was little. We had a Carnegie Public Library, and they had the Peter Pan room on the lower level that was for children and tweens. I loved to explore there.
    5. The first time you saw a Heron? I may have seen one, but I don't remember.

    1. Yes, gas was that cheap. I love the Carnegie libraries. We need a movement like that to promote literacy again.
