This is my oldest brother, in my grandfather's boat. A classic wood boat. The boat was gone before I came along, there were later small metal boats. Most likely this was a small lake in Michigan. Both of my grandfathers liked to fish. My paternal grandfather thought boats were cumbersome and expensive, my maternal grandfather owned several small simple boats. He wanted to get out on the water where there was no one around. Any early boat memories for you?
My dads cousin always use to take me speeding boating on Lake Harvey where they had a place. Now the most excitement is taking a canoe out on the lake here for arm exercise.
ReplyDeleteMy Uncle had a boat when I was growing up,
Deletethe earliest boat trip I remember was the cape may/lewes ferry. I think I was a teen then and my family was on vacation.
ReplyDeleteI was older the first time I rode a ferry
DeleteI wish I had early boat memories. I have two photos from when I was possibly 4. One of my father and sister in a row boat and the other of my mother and me. I have no memory of the four of us being out on a lake together but it looks blissful.
ReplyDeleteI have long wanted to own a small boat.
DeleteJust once fishing with my father and his father in a tinnie (tin boat) So boring.
ReplyDeleteI last went fishing, in about 1978. Very boring.
DeleteThe only boats that were common when I was a kid on the landlocked prairies were canoes for paddling down the rivers and lakes.
ReplyDeleteI missed having real lakes when I lived in Kentucky. Growing up near the great lakes, Michigan has 11,000 small lakes.
DeleteI grew up in city on the Mississippi River so boats were all around but my family didn't own one until I was around 16 years old and my dad purchased an Amphicar. My dad was always into the most unusual things! He loved driving down to the river and just driving right into the water. He really loved the look on people's faces when he did that.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been fun.
DeleteMy father used to take us to the beach in San Diego. He'd stop along the way and tell us about the ships in the docks. He loved that. I guess he missed being in the navy.
ReplyDeleteMy one and only experience with a boat was when I was in my late thirties. We went to a man made lake, and my nonswimming husband got the bright idea of renting one of those little aluminum (I think) row boats. I managed to get my clumsy ass into the thing. Getting out of it was another matter. The boat rocked, naturally, and I fell to my knees right onto the ridged floor or seats, I don't remember which. I still have the scars on my knees. Good times.
Ouch! My ex didn't swim, one of the reasons I didn't own a boat when I lived in Florida.
DeleteYes lots. I sort of grew up on my grandfathers' wooden cabin cruiser. these are my favorite childhood memories.
ReplyDeleteSweeT!
