Sunday Five - Kids Yesterday and Today

  1. What do you have today, that you wish you had a kid?
  2. Did you drink alcohol, before you were "of age?"
  3. Did you have a secret hiding place as a kid?
  4. Did you have a room of your own as a child?
  5. Where did you escape to as a kid?
My answers:
  1. What do you have today, that you wish you had a kid? Spell check, it would have made my life so much easier.
  2. Did you drink alcohol, before you were "of age?"  No, I was a good kid in many ways (meaning I got away with things because, 'he'd never do that!')
  3. Did you have a secret hiding place as a kid? Not really, my mother always seemed to know where I was.
  4. Did you have a room of your own as a child? Not until my brothers left home, until I was 13 there were three of us sharing a bedroom.
  5. Where did you escape to as a kid? The old barn on the farm, no one went there, it was old, quiet, and only a little spooky.
Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. 1. What do you have today, that you wish you had a kid? The internet - I could have found out that being gay is no big deal a lot, lot earlier. (And avoided decades of guilt, shame and internalised homophobia).
    2. Did you drink alcohol, before you were "of age?" No, my parents didn't drink.
    3. Did you have a secret hiding place as a kid? We shifted frequently due to my father's job, but as a kid we usually had a cubby house in the back yard, or a tree house wherever we lived.
    4. Did you have a room of your own as a child? I shared a room with my younger brother until we moved to a bigger house when I was 13. I had my own room for just one year - before we shifted again and we had to share for the next 4 years. After that, I shared a room at college and didn't have a room of my own until I was working and living alone in my own 1 bedroom apartment.
    5. Where did you escape to as a kid? Books - I loved to read.

    5. Our house was on a steep hill, so I spent some time under the house on my own.

  6. 1. What do you have today, that you wish you had a kid? Common sense. The Internet would have made things easier, but since we didn't have it, we did not know any differently.
    2. Did you drink alcohol, before you were "of age?" No, I don't think so. The day I turned 21, I opened the vodka bottle I had hidden in my hair dryer in my dorm room, and make screwdrivers for a select few of my dorm mates who were not in the ultra-religious group at my college.
    3. Did you have a secret hiding place as a kid? Not really--maybe the basement to escape the summer heat before we had AC.
    4. Did you have a room of your own as a child? Yes.
    5. Where did you escape to as a kid? Reading, always, and as an adult, too.

    4. I got a room of my own at about 14. Before that, my sisters and I shared a room.
    5. I escaped on my bicycle to places all over town. My parents always said "don't go far" but I rode that bike from one end of town to the other. The early beginnings of my wanderlust.
