The Way We Were Wednesday WDW

This slide was square, telling me is was taken on Kodak 126 film, the square instamatic format.  Walt Disney World opened October 1st 1971, we visited in February of 1972, and that is when this would have been taken.  That was back in the early days, of different valued ride tickets, short lines, limited food options.  At one time, I had two or three instamatic cameras, I must have tossed them at some point. They stopped making film in that format in 2008, but it became hard to find long before that.  There is a long history or orphan format cameras.

Travel and taking pictures have long gone hand in hand for me.  I remember buying film at K-Mart for the trip to Florida that winter.

Do you still have a film camera sitting around? (I have at least two.)

  1. I think I still have my old Pentax 35mm, circa 1987, a Canon EOS SLR from some time in the '90s, and I sold an older Minolta in 2003 (I don't even remember where it came from). Since 2003 I went digital and now have 3 of those. Can you even buy film anymore?

    1. Yes you can buy film, Fuji and I believe Ilford still make it. A bigger challenge is finding someone to process and print it.

  2. Nope. It has been years since I had a film camera. My father however had about 6 different film cameras, all working to my knowledge to his death. A antique collector bought them from my mother. He also had cases upon cases of slides. I have no idea what happen to those, or the movie projector and films.

    1. I have a handful of old cameras, one that my grandfather bought in the 1920's. I scanned all of my father's slides. I should send the old 8mm movie film out to be scanned, or find a projector.

No. Film cameras have gone from here. Is Walt Disney World what went on to become Disneyland?

    1. Walt Disney World, is in Florida, Disneyland is in California. Disneyland was the first Disney park, opening in 1955. Walt Disney World was the first expansion of Disney theme parks, WDW is just south of Orlando, Florida. My middle brother has worked for Disney for 42 years.

  4. I loved my Instamatic. That was my second camera. First was a hand-me-down Brownie. I had a Kodak Retina until we left for Spain in 2011; but I hadn't used it since buying my first digital in 2000. I gave the Retina to a charity shop.

    1. I gave away a box full of classics when we sold the second house. We have a friend who has taken up shooting film cameras, I also gave him all of the darkroom equipment.

    2. Love that pic!
It looks like a dream. Funny that you mention it, but I was talking to my one friend a few weeks ago and I told him how fun it was that they were promoting some film cameras again (I really, really want a Polaroid!). I have some very old cameras, but I've gotten them while thrifting. I'm not sure any of them would work. I have to admit I have not had a camera with film for many, many years...

      XOXO

    3. 35mm and 120 roll film are available, processing has become largely a mail away unless you live in a major city. I parted with a Polaroid SX-70 Model one a few years ago (the chrome and brown leather first version) I regret letting go of it, film is once again available for it. I have a Polaroid film pack camera, no idea if I could find a battery for it. Film is available for it, but very expensive.

  5. my first camera was a polaroid swinger. my second took a 126 film cartridge, then I went to a 110 cartridge, then to a canon digital. I still use the canon.

spouse has 2 cameras; each took a cylinder cartridge.

    1. Ah, 110, I ran across some 110 negatives recently - tiny little pains to work with. I have a film and slide scanner that will convert film negatives to digital positives. I need to spend more time with it.

  6. I'm not sure what year I first visited but I do remember that I was there with my parents for the opening ceremonies of EPCOT. I don't remember what camera I was using back then but I know I was shooting slides. I do still have a couple of film cameras but, I think they are in a box in my storage unit. I heard there is new interest in them so I should get them out and see if anyone wants to buy them.

    1. I have a framed poster from the EPCOT opening. I went to a pre-opening day at EPCOT, employees and invited guest were let in to test things before they opened to the public. The Universe of Energy shut down in the middle, and we were sent out a back door.
