Sunday Five - Driving

Mitchell is getting a driving license in Spain.  He has a few years of experience, but the rules are different in Spain, so he is driving with an instructor to get ready.  Made me think about my learning to drive.  Hence this weeks Sunday five, driving. I think when he passes he should get something in red, like the car above, it would look good on him.

  1. Did you ever drive on the road before you "officially" learned to drive?
  2. At what age did you get your first driving license?
  3. Can you drive a car with a drive a manual transmission?
  4. Was your driving test easy or hard?
  5. Did you have to parallel park to get a license?
My answers:

  1. Did you ever drive on the road before you "officially" learned to drive?  Only once, I spent a week on a ranch in Colorado and drove a pickup truck back from one of the remote parts of the ranch to the barns, I was terrified.
  2. At what age did you get your first driving license? 16, my father insisted.
  3. Can you drive a car with a drive a manual transmission? Yes, I did about have of my student driving in an aging Ford pickup truck with a three speed manual. The last time was a rental in Iceland in 2015.
  4. Was your driving test easy or hard? Easy, three left turns, one right turn and the examiner said "get it stopped in the parking lot without hitting anything and you passed."
  5. Did you have to parallel park to get a license? Thankfully, NO, still not my best skill.
Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. 1. Did you ever drive on the road before you "officially" learned to drive? Yes. With my father. But it was legal because I had a learners permit.
    2. At what age did you get your first driving license? 17
    3. Can you drive a car with a drive a manual transmission? Yes, but won't be permitted in Spain because it requires a different exam and THAT is like learning to drive all over again. There are rules for when to shift, when to down-shift, when to hit the clutch.
    4. Was your driving test easy or hard? We'll see! When I was 17, I did everything perfectly. Twice in the one exam! The examiner was hoping to fail the hippie, I think.
    5. Did you have to parallel park to get a license? Yes. Don't know about this time coming up.

  2. 1. When I was 15, a neighbor said, "I didn't know Blobby had his driver's license already!" to my parents. Alas, I did not, yet I had been out with the car.
    2. 16. It got delayed by 3 mos due to incident above in #1.
    3. Yes. I miss manual transmission. With so many electric vehicles, I fear this will totally be a thing of the past soon.
    4. I don't remember it being difficult. I passed first time out.
    5. Technically no. They now called it "maneuvering", but big picture, it was parallel parking.

    2. Seventeen.
    3. I learned to drive on a manual, took my driver's test on a manual and drove a manual until 1992 when I bought my first automatic.
    4. It was a standard test. I passed it the first time.
    5. Yes and I aced it with a perfect score. I practiced parallel parking for hours on the road outside our house, parking between my father's two sawhorses.

    1. I was licensed in rural Michigan, and parking was not really a challenge with thousands of acres of cows and corn, in Florida where I was spending half of my time, my friends were telling horror stories of parallel parking on the exam, in a space that was adjusted to just barely longer than the car.

  7. 1. No. Through a chain link fence and into a ditch, but not on a road.
    2. First driver's license at 24 I think. Ears pierced at 26. I get those confused.
    3. Nope. Life is too short for that nonsense.
    4. The test was easy. Driving with a stranger was hard. I was a wreck.
    5. Nope, but I didn't know that going in, hence the flop sweat. I managed to go to the more lax DMV in San Diego. It's been 41 years and I still can't parallel park!
