The Sunday Five: Inquiring Minds

1: Do you use reusable shopping bags?

2: When was the last time you used paper-money?

3: Are you answering this on a computer, tablet or phone?

4: Is your community recycling glass?

5: Do you still write checks?

My answers:

1: Do you use reusable shopping bags? Yes, Virginia now has a 5 cent tax on disposable shopping bags and I HATE plastic shopping bags.

2: When was the last time you used paper-money? At the farmers market The Pastry Dude was not accepting cards.

3: Are you answering this on a computer, tablet or phone? desktop computer - I am old fashioned like that.

4: Is your community recycling glass? No, the service at the condo stopped accepting glass, and actually charges us extra for glass that ends up in the recycling bins.

5: Do you still write checks?  A few, I should stop doing that.

Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. 1. Yes. Most stores here don't have bags any more, except for reusable shopping bags for a small price.

    2. Yesterday at the Saturday market in town.

    3. Desktop. Old fashioned here as well.

    4. Yup. And magazines/paper. And all packaging materials.

    5. Usually only to contractors. Regular bills are wired into the bank account directly.

    1. Yes. Pretty well as Walt describes above.

    2. A couple of weeks ago a friend gave me cash to pay for his theatre ticket and I did tip a pair of talented buskers with a note but really, not since the 'Great outbreak' however many years ago it was.

    3. Desktop. To write takes me much longer on a phone or tablet.

    4. Our local councils have accepted glass recycling collection since the early 1980s. We are diligent recyclers although plastic confused us until we heard, if it springs back to its formed shaped, it can be recycled.

    5. Cheques? Not since...maybe the late 1980s. My husband still has a cheque book although never used. We have had buy bank cheques a couple of times to pay for new cars etc.

Do you have Big Issue magazine there? It is sold on the street by people who may otherwise be begging. Even they have electronic machines to pay if you buy their magazine.

    2. In Washington DC it is called "Street Sense" and the last I knew they were cash only, but it has been a couple of years since I saw them regularly. Written and sold my people in need.

    2. Re glass. I don't know the cause, but they stopped accepting glass around here. Odd.

  4. 1. Mostly all the time. Once in a while I'm out and get something where I'm not near the car to grab one.
    2. Maybe once every month or two. I've basically had the same $20 in my pocket since xmas.
    3. Computer
    4. Yes. We are diligent about separating for recycling.
    5. Yes. But maybe once a year if having to pay a vendor who can't take e-payment of some kind. Honestly, 710 handles that. I'm not 100% sure I know where the checks are kept.

  7. 1. I use reusable shopping bags maybe 50% of the time.
    2. I always carry paper money but usually only use it for small purchases of $10 or less. I hate putting small charges on a credit card. This makes me an "old person," I know.
    3. Desktop computer. I'm old fashioned too.
    4. I believe glass is recycled here. At least, I always put mine in my blue bag.
    5. I still write an occasional cheque when needed, but it's increasingly rare.

    1. Just in the last couple of years have I started doing small purchases on cards. Some merchants really prefer it. Others dread the processing fees.

  8. 1. Reusable shopping bags? Yep, for years now. It's the law.

    2. I use paper money monthly to pay our gardener/landscaper. Jesus is worth it. I also tip with paper.

    3. I use a desktop. Bigger screen and easy to use big keyboard.

    4. My community recycles everything. I'm happy we don't have to separate the recyclables anymore. That was a pain.

    5. I write checks to pay bills to those who don't have online billing. Fewer of those these days. I have a big stack of checks with my old address on them. I believe they will be valuable antiques one day.

    1. I wish I had kept the first checks on my first checking account, the bank didn't have account numbers, everything was done by name. A year or so later they had to issue account numbers, or the federal reserve was going to stop clearing the checks. I had a checking account before I had a drivers license. The first check I wrote was to rent an airplane.

  12. I use reusable shopping bags whenever I remember to bring them in with me to the shop.

I rarely use paper-money and often surprise myself when looking in my wallet and discovering/remembering I have money in there. My husband insists I keep some money in my wallet at all times.

I always comment on non-wordpress blogs on my laptop, because I have great difficulty doing so on my iPhone or iPad for some reason.

We have separate garbage and recycling bins. Glass, paper, and recyclable plastic go in the recycle bin together, which is picked up each week.

My husband currently handles all the bill paying, and only writes checks rarely when no other options are available. (We have had the same check book for years.)
