Sunday Five - Going Out to Eat

I enjoy cooking, and I don't enjoy eating out alone.  The result was a habit of almost always cooking at home, seldom going out.  With both of us back in the same house, we resolved to go out more often, I said once a month, Jay said once a week.  And we have been.  Hence this weeks Sunday Five, Going out to eat.

1: When you go out, do you go to the same places or try something new?
2: Given a choice between a known national chain, and an unknown local place- what do you choose?
3: When was the last time you went out to eat?
4: Do you enjoy going out to eat alone?
5: Are you a big tipper?

My Answers:
1: When you go out, do you go to the same places or try something new?  We are trying new places, all old favorites were once places you had never been.
2: Given a choice between a known national chain, and an unknown local place- what do you choose? We are trying unknown local places - so far so fun.
3: When was the last time you went out to eat? Last night.
4: Do you enjoy going out to eat alone? Not really, and this is a change, when I was in college I really looked forward to going out to dinner before class alone.
5: Are you a big tipper? Yes, 20% or more.  Servers work hard and have to be nice to the spectrum of nasty human beings.

Your answers in the comments.

  1. I love eating and when your with me plan on a few hours...ask Anne Marie!

1: When you go out, do you go to the same places or try something new? Both.

2: Given a choice between a known national chain, and an unknown local place- what do you choose? 95% of the time a local unknown place. Around here they may be more expensive, but the service, food and atmosphere are way better and no kids and waiting in lines

3: When was the last time you went out to eat? Tuesday night.
4: Do you enjoy going out to eat alone? I have, and will generally sit at the bar, but I almost always run into someone I know.

5: Are you a big tipper? If my service is good and pleasing,,,hell yes. Some rely on those tips for their living.

  3. 1. Both -- like anne marie says, it depends on what we want to eat.
    2. Ditto. We go where the food is good.
    3. We usually eat out about once a week. Tonight we're going to Tony Roma's.
    4. It does not bother me in the least to eat alone in a restaurant. I never read while doing so either. And I don't let them stick me at a bad table in the back or in a corner just because I'm a singleton diner. I make them put me front and centre!
    5. Unlike the USA, Canadian wait staff must be paid minimum wage ($15/hour in Alberta). So we tip more moderately than Americans do -- 15% is standard here. I will tip 20% if the service is exceptional.

  4. 1: When you go out, do you go to the same places or try something new? Both--but we try to stay within a five mile radius to save time.
2: Given a choice between a known national chain, and an unknown local place- what do you choose? I'd prefer a local place, but they are usually more expensive.
3: When was the last time you went out to eat? About a week ago.
4: Do you enjoy going out to eat alone? No, but I take a book, so I am never lonely!
5: Are you a big tipper? Almost always unless the service is terrible. I (we) usually tip 20-30%; waitstaff are no longer college students having a part-time job. I wonder how many of today's restaurant workers even have health insurance offered through their job???

  5. 1: When you go out, do you go to the same places or try something new? We have about 5 regular haunts with 2 favorites and then will every so often try something new for a change.
2: Given a choice between a known national chain, and an unknown local place- what do you choose? Unknown local place, absolutely.
3: When was the last time you went out to eat? Just got back from lunch.
4: Do you enjoy going out to eat alone? Not really, but I've gotten better at it.
5: Are you a big tipper? In the States, yes. Here in Spain, I always tip but usually the standard, which usually tops out at 5 percent (we sometimes leave 10). (In Sevilla, when we left tips, the servers would chase after us thinking we forgot our change.)
