Plunder

There is a line in a Buffet song, "Yes I am a pirate, 200 years too late!" My sister tells me, there is a privateer, a government sanctioned pirate in my family history. I wonder what treasures he plundered.  The Parthenon marbles,  are in London.  An interesting story of plunder.  As I heard the story of how then ended up in London instead of Athens, Turkey occupied Athens, they have done that from time to time over the past 400 years.  While the Turks were in charge, an Englishman asked if they would mind if he took home a few souvenirs.  The Turks said, help yourself, so he crated up and shipped home some of the most significant art treasures to survive from the ancient world.  When the Greeks were back in charge of Athens, they were a bit miffed, in fact I think they still would like their treasure back.  In the mean time, it is very worth the trip to the British Museum in London to see them.

What would you plunder if someone said, go ahead and take what you like?

  1. I saw the “marbles” for the first time last year. Stunning. And the debate about whether or not it was plunder rages on. I would only accept “plunder” if it meant saving something from destruction and then it would only be for temporary safekeeping, not for permanent enrichment.

  4. I have everything I need, so I would not take a thing.

  5. I do like marble, but I like sparkly things even more (and marble is kinda heavy to haul out of town with. Colored stones, your sapphires, emeralds, rubies and whatnot. I think diamonds are boring. I would, of course, also spirit away my Sweet Poopsie if I didn't already have him.
