The Way We Were Wednesday - What do I remember

This photo was taken before I was born, those are my two brothers and my sister who is about 18 months older than I am.  My grandmother is on the sofa.

I remember that Sofa. It was a dark green and had a deeply textured fabric.  I remember the feel of the texture of the textile.  I don't often think of textures, but that one stands out, it was both stiff and soft at the same time.  The replacement had a pleated brown wool fabric, with a Walnut frame across the top at the back, across the bottom and caps on the arms, wood legs.  I remember the brown wool being soft to the touch. She bought furniture to last, the brown wool one my father had in his den in the house in Florida for years after my grandmother died, until my mother convinced him she needed the space for a third desk.

What textures to you remember from your youth?

  1. Both my parents and grandparents had similar sofa's, or has she'd say the davenport. I can still feel that velvet texture. And I can still feel the touch of a baby blanket...it was cashmere with a silk trim.

  2. I remember the nubby wool of my parents 1950-made living room sofa and club chair. The stick (orange) vinyl sofa in the den. When I was in college, my housemates and I found a set of vintage living room furniture in that same type of fabric as your grandmother's sofa. We rented a fabric cleaner and it was like new.

  3. We went from a shabby and lumpy old club lounge suite to modern deerhide suite and I remember the coolness and the texture of the hide.

  4. My father had a Mister Rogers' sweater. It was red, and had a zipper and was so soft.it was his sweater but I used to "borrow" it and wear it to school. He didn't wear it much so I thought it was okay, and it was. But then I stopped wearing it and now I have no idea what happened to it. I just remember being cozy in it.

    1. I think this one was from the early 50's, and they used it into the late 60's.

  7. Well, this brought back a long lost memory. I think my parents had a very similar sofa. I remember the dark green fabric that had some type of sculpted texture. Wow, I forgot all about that sofa.

  8. I can barely remember yesterday, let alone a texture from my youth! Oh, wait, a vague memory from the sixties approaches (I can tell by the wavy lines and harp music). Shag carpet. Ugly, gold (when clean) shag carpet. The pile so high we may have lot a puppy in it. I found a needle, the hard way. Stomped right on it, barefoot. Took forever for me to allow anyone to take it out (parents weren't home at the time). It is still very hard for me to go without shoes. So, yeah, shag carpet.

    2. I remember that, probably gold, or green, or rust colored. Came with a rake, you needed a hoe.
