The Way We Were Wednesday - Happy Birthday to my Sister

My sister's birthday is tomorrow, this photo was taken about 60 years ago.  I think she has another year to go for her welcome the Medicare event.

My oldest brother is standing behind us, I have no idea where my middle brother is, that is me looking down with the bowtie on.  This was in front of the "new house" on the farm.  It was tiny by today's standards, under 1,000 sq. ft. (about 92 Sq. meters) three bedrooms, one bathroom, a tiny kitchen, and there were six of us.  And within five years it was paid for.  As farmers, my parents didn't believe in debt, there are too many uncertainties on the farm. I have really complicated feelings about the farm, it was a quiet safe place to grow up, but isolated from the real world.  I have no desire to return.  I do need to go see my sister, maybe later this summer.

  1. She would like that. It would be a nice and SAFE get-a-way too.

Now do you still ever wear bow ties? I love them and still do.

Generally once you reach puberty, a country farm is no place for a young gay man. I know.

  3. I hope you get to see your sister. Some exceptional experiences growing up on a farm, I'm sure, but being so removed from museums and city explorations -- and pizza places, and bagel shops -- is hard for me to imagine.

    1. I won't tell you how old I was before I saw a bagel shop.

    2. I can only imagine. I was 10; we had left the suburbs for Brooklyn and an old bagel bakery was a few minutes away. I would watch them make the bagels and I would then get one that was still hot. SOOO good.

I'm gonna use this as my response to every dumb question today. Just to, you know, keep people off balance.

    1. Pizza was something my aunt made, from a mix that came in a box.

  5. It's amazing how much smaller post-war houses were, compared to today's expectations about how much space is needed for a family! Happy Bday to your sister!

  7. OMG so cute!
Love you in your bow tie! Like Maddie, I still wear them, too. I inherited a ton from my ex's great uncle. Love them.
And did you know that you inspired me to post a pic of my mum in my blog? yes, you did that.
I agree with Debra. Houses seem to have grown to ridiculous dimensions nowadays.
Please wish your sister a happy bday from all of us!

    XOXO
