Travel Tuesday: The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

From the upper lobby of the Concert Hall, looking out to the River

My Daily Selfie

It is rare to see that much ice on the Potomac River.

The Reach, better in color or black and white?

The Grand Foyer at the KC.

The night before a pickup truck had an accident and went off the side of the next bridge downriver, the Memorial Bridge.  The two people in the truck died from exposure  to the freezing water (one was not found until the next day when the truck was craned out of the river.)

Warming up for the performance

This was probably 20 minutes before curtain time, most of those seats filled in.

Sweetie Bear looking dashing.

The Georgetown bend in the Potomac River covered in ice.

  1. The river doesn't seem to be frozen, but covered with floating ice? Whatever, it is cold. The Kennedy Centre looks like a beautiful performance space.

    1. Probably 1-2 inches of ice, with a layer of snow. Thinner near the middle.

    1. We enjoy being close enough to easily get out to see things.

  3. Catching the door opening in the first pic was brilliant. The Reach was not looking its best that day, either in BW or color. Yes, I am dashing, ain't I? 😘

  4. I like that pop of color in the window on the bottom photo of The Reach but overall the black and white photo wins.

  5. Awesome photos that brought back a memory. Sometime around the beginning. 1990's, I went to DC for a wedding. I arrived a day early to have a look around on my own and the concierge at the hotel got me a ticket to see a performance at the Kennedy Center. I was so excited. It was the very beginning of cell phones and I tried desperately to call home from the patio around the center to tell my family where I was. I could never get cell coverage. I had to wait and call from the hotel. I just remember being so thrilled to be there.

  6. Aren't those lights and chandeliers lovely?! I wonder who has the job of keeping them clean? ;)
Looks like you had a great evening!

    1. This one was a Friday midday performance, a little less crowded than the evenings and I don't have to drive home after dark. We had tickets for 2 or 3 of the midday programs this year.

  7. We used to enjoy going there. Never saw the Potomac iced over. Great pic of J. I like the subtle glow of color photo better.
