Taking Stock - How am I doing?

I have debated posting this. I try to stay positive all of the time. I was trained in the fake it till you make it mind set.  But at times, I need to pause and take stock. Doing so helps me understand where I really am.  For work, I write reports a couple of times a year, of all of the trainings and publications I have finished in a year.  I am always surprised by how much I have done.

Almost 3/4 of the way over, 2020 has been filled with unexpected adventures.  Some good, some not.

What is going well for me?

  • I am enjoying working from home.
  • I like my 5 second commute.
  • I like the dress code (or lack thereof)
  • I like our Zoom staff meetings
  • I am enjoying my daily walks.  I have developed a routine, I do well with routine.
  • I am enjoying cooking, and having time to be creative in the kitchen from time to time
  •  I love my remodeled bathroom, I dreamed about what I wanted, defied the conventions, and I love what I have

What is not working so well for me?

  • I miss traveling, for the first time in years I have gone six months with no pending airline reservations
  • I miss eating out.  I tire of my own cooking from time to time.
  • I miss the reading time on the trains going to and from the office - I will do well to finish half the number of books this year that I did last.
  • I miss looking up to watch the progress on the new Potomac Yard Station, and counting the number of private jets at National Airport (a sure sign of how many people are in town to buy a congressman today)
  • I am afraid of the election.
  • I have stopped watching the news.  Between the plague, the genocide at the hands of the government, and the liar in chief, I just couldn't watch anymore.  I never thought that I would choose being uninformed to protect my wellbeing.

How are you holding up?

  1. I think it's great to take stock like this once in awhile -- yes, like a performance review at work! I am very fortunate not to be affected by unemployment, working at home or financial uncertainty because I am blissfully retired. I miss eating in restaurants, going to movies and not traveling but, you know what? In the big scheme of things, such small hardships are easily endured. Gawd knows I have endured worse, so again -- I'm very fortunate!

    1. I have a comfortable life. Many in the world would love to have what I sometimes complain about.

  2. We shall see in a week. When summer ends, a piece of me goes with it every year.

With me it's been a constant battle of positive verses negative. Good verses evil.

I stopped watching and listening to the news for most of April into May, but in spite of things becoming worse here, I tuned back in to the horror. Lol at buying a Congressman. Many a truth spoken in jest.

  5. we get take-out from local restaurants (no chains) when we get tired of cooking. so metro is constructing a station at potomac yards; interesting.

we and the 3 cats are all doing well. and yes, some people can only dream about what you and sweet bear have. you wake up on this side of the grass each morning = it's a great day.

    VOTE LIKE RBG WOULD DO!

    1. I am a strong believer in enjoy what you have and where you are. I have known people who were miserable in 4,000 sq ft homes, with housekeepers and gardeners, and people who were perfectly content in a 30 ft travel trailer. Work with what you have,

  6. I don't mind the working from home. it cut my commute from 7 minutes to 7 seconds, so that's a plus.
We have gone out to eat a couple of times, usually early to avoid crowds and only in places where everyone is masked. Other than that we do some take out, but cook a lot, too.
I, too, worry about the election because I don't trust THAT party and its leader. So I will fight and talk and yell and stomp my feet so people KNOW what's at stake.

    Stay safe.
    Stay calm.

  7. About the same as you. I too enjoy working from home but I do miss that person to person contact. I am very, very worried about the election and I can sometimes feel the tension. I'm hanging in!

  8. I admit i am not holding up.
I have eliminated Facebook and the news which seems to help some.
I draw upon the philosophy of the stoics and the occasional bag of nasty chips with dip.
