In My Backyard

I am exploring places in my backyard this year.  I have lived in many places, and it always surprises me how little I know about what is close by.  Working at home, has freed time for a daily walk, the gym was closed for months, and is very limited now that it is opened, all of this has resulted in walking a lot.  Most mornings I walk the same trail, about two miles round trip in a swamp along the Potomac River.  I am noticing the subtle changes in season.  Changes in the colors, different birds, bugs and flowers.  I try to listen, I try to be aware of what is happening around me.  It is so easy to get into our bubble, and not see, hear or smell what is around us.  I am practicing awareness.

Can anyone identify the butterfly?

  1. I think that is either a swallowtail or a tiger swallowtail, Im not sure which...but they sure are pretty. A shame the toll pesticides are having on butterflies and fire flies. Every years their seems less.

  2. His name is Max. He was born in Arlington (somewhere near Ballston), but moved to Alexandria when he left home. His likes include long flights near the river, sitting by the fire (but not too close) with hot chocolate and good book, and fluffy dogs. His dislikes include drama queens, racists, and butterfly nets.

I am fitter than I have been for some time after making the decision to walk for exercise rather than incidental walking as we used to do as we went about our lives. And yes, I am taking a lot of notice of nature.
    Lol at Walt's comment.
