Travel Tuesday: San Francisco May 2016

In May of 2016 I was invited to participate on a committee to set standards for health care decision making, for patients who lacked a legal representative, close family or friends. The meeting was in San Francisco. The medical society covered the travel arrangements, including a couple of nights at the Fairmont hotel on Nob Hill.  A hint, medical associations often meet at the nicest of hotels, if they are paying the bill, always say yes.

I had speaking engagement at a conference in Chicago the day before. I flew to San Francisco, arriving close to midnight.  I took a taxi into the city.  I refer to it as Mr Toads Wild Ride, I never knew a Toyota Prius would do 100 miles an hour, but that was the ride I had into San Francisco that night. I arrived safe and sound.

When I was leaving the hotel, Steve Wozniak - co-founder of Apple, stopped his car and waited while I crossed the drive.

  1. San Francisco it's probably the only city I would live in on the East Coast. I think I visited out there every summer for about 9 years. And since it's so close to the Sonoma and Napa Valley I'd move out there in a heartbeat. I only ever stayed at the Fairmont one time. If I go out there now I generally say with my friends in Sausalito.

  2. I like that passengers can still hang off the tram, that is if they still can in 2025.

    1. I have done that, the seats on the outside are most popular.

  3. I love that city and love seeing these photos. Before we lived there in the ´90s, we went for a visit in 1989 and stayed at the Fairmont. My cousin took a break from her law board studies and met me for a drink at the bar. Nice memories. Glad Steve Wozniak stopped for you.

  4. Always nice to stay in a swanky hotel! The nicest ones I ever stayed in on some legal organization's or government's dime were the Chateau Lake Louise here in Alberta and a huge tower right beside (and I mean RIGHT beside!) Niagara Falls with a spectacular panoramic view of the Horseshoe Falls in each room. Can't remember that hotel's name now.

  6. We were fortunate to stay at the Fairmont a couple times compliments of Todd's company. I would love to visit San Francisco again...maybe stay in Napa and drive into the city for sight seeing.

  9. We visited San Fran many moons ago. We we're broke back then (had a flight we had to use or lose, so we chose SF,) so we couldn't afford to do much besides a walking self-tour and eating the cheapest food we could find (subs.) I would love to go back. Also, I am a sucker for a fancy schmancy hotel....

  10. I used to be part of the Bridge and tunnel riff-raff coming in for the symphony and ACT. In the past, I used to be able to take the train down for a matinee and return late in the evening (tip - try to get on the train that terminates at your stop so you don't doze off and find yourself miles our of town). Things changed with the '08 Recession and I haven't been able to do that for a number of years.
