The Saturday Morning Post - 50 States in 52 Weeks - Iowa

Today, we board a slow boat to Rotterdam. I have scheduled posts that will fill the days at sea. We have WiFi this trip. I don't know how well it will work, and what I will be able to post while moving slowly east across the Atlantic.  I will edit and post as I can.  If I can't there will be daily posts. I likely will be slow to respond to comments, but please leave comments I will read and respond to them as I can.

Iowa is west of Illinois. I have been there a couple of times. There are hundreds of miles of rolling farmland, lots of corn, and livestock.

Umm, more pigs than people. More Pork Queens than any other state.

I am glad I have been there.  I think it is a great place for people to say they are from. But I can't think of a single reason why I would want to go back there.

  1. We were there to get married. Sioux City! Apparently more commonly known as Sewer City. In our 1-hour drive from Sioux Falls, we followed behind a large truck filled with pigs. It was a stinky trip.

  2. This post's photos confused me. Lots of palm trees in Iowa, are there?

  3. Back in the day of my paralegal work, I got to spend a week in Muscatine, Iowa, looking at boxes and boxes of documents for a copyright infringement case. It's on the Mississippi River, known for its agriculture, particularly the Muscatine Melon (cantaloupe), and tis claim to fame is it's the "Pearl Button Capital of the World," due to its historic pearl button industry. So there's that.

  4. I, too, thought: palm trees? Iowa???
I have flown over Iowa many times but have never been on the ground and I think that's okay.
    Safe crossing!

  6. I went to college in Dubuque, Iowa and had a great time while I was there. We had many "woodsies" (drinking parties) along the Mississippi River.

  7. The Des Moines, Iowa metro area is actually quite nice. I've lived there full or part-time for over 40 years. Iowa was the third state in the union to make same sex marriage legal. My husband and I married there in 2009. In the last 15 years, the state has morphed from a fairly progressive place to a toxic MAGA place. If I didn't have friends and family there, I would never go back.

  8. Off you go on another fun adventure! Enjoy every minute of it!
Growing up in Illinois, we visited Iowa quite often. My dad sold Amana appliances so we would visit the factory a few times a year. The Amana colonies are an interesting place founded by German pietists so the villages are quaint and people are humble. We used to dine at a place called The Ox Yoke Inn. Delicious food served family style.
