The Fine Line Between Casual and Lazy

For 15 years, I had jobs that required starched shirts and ties, every day, even when I was walking land, or doing quality checks on construction sites.  At one point I owned a closet full of tailored suits. My first job out of law school was much more casual, the dress code was please don't offend anyone, look like a lawyer when you need to, and beyond that we don't care.  My current job, is officially business casual, we tend to the casual side.  I can't get away with wearing the funny shirt, but I almost never wear a tie.

Give the choice I would sooner be a slob, than wear a suit.

And you?

  1. looks like my nylacat.

I wear casual pants & t-shirts to work. on the rare day we have a visitor, I wear a nice dress top with the casual pants. but secretly I'd rather be naked.

You really wore starched shirts? Are you 100 years old?

    1. I still send shirts out to be starched and pressed, but rather than white, they are colorful.

  3. I'm all for casual if done right. I feel society is way to lose...running around in sweats. No fashion or style anymore. I was always brought up to look nice and dressed when stepping out. Course up to me I'd lived in the Edwardian times.

We always comment in the store how sloppy people look. Active clothes are meant for the gym...and should stay in the gym.

  4. It’s odd but when I worked I preferred proper business attire. I think it made me feel like I was truly off when I went casual. Now... I work jacket and tie for a holiday party a few years ago. Other than that, the suits have come out for 2 funerals and nothing else. Fortunately, I have friends who regularly borrow my ties ... and even a jacket a couple of times. My friend’s son regularly borrows my dress shoes, which makes me feel so cool. Still, I’m not one for slobby.

  5. When working, dress pants and nice tops. Hated suit jackets though so never wore them. Now retired, jeans and t-shirts every day, baby!

  6. I like to be a little dressed up at work. At home I like comfortable but not a slob. People in sweats is bad enough but even worse are people in pajamas that look like they slept in them the night before. My mother told me a story, my parents while on a weekend getaway, came down to breakfast at the hotel they were staying. Being an older generation, they showered and dressed before leaving their room. A group of young people sat at a table next to them in pajamas. The thought of them just rolling out of bed and sitting there made my father's stomach sick, they had to move to another table further away.

  7. My first year of teaching, back in 1972, women teachers couldn't even wear dressy pants suits to work. We burst that taboo somehow that year, but I don't remember how. My final school job (1990-2008), I wore jumpers and blouses or skirts and tops, slacks and sweaters, jeans on casual Fridays. Now I wear only comfy at home and jeans and a top when out. I've even worn nice jeans to church.

  8. I am casually slobby, or slobbingly casual. If I'm not leaving the house I stay in whatever night shirt I slept in. They're comfortable, so why cause more laundry? I do shower before BH comes home, and try not to be sitting in the same spot I was in when he left the house :) I do spiffy up when leaving the house. Friends seem to notice when I'm not wearing earrings, of all things. I didn't realize that was a thing. Lipstick is as far as I go with make up. I am truly an at home slob, a clean one, but a slob nonetheless.

  9. I realized early I don't have to look too good as the boss-man doesn't and I have a waiting list of 4 months. On the other hand my 'casual slob' is my own wear which gets kudos.
