Sunday Five - Retirement Plans

Sometime last year, I quietly marked the date on my office calendar with a note to not schedule any work after that date, a few months later I told my boss of my plans, then at our last board meeting I mentioned a new five year project and turned to a colleague and said, "you will need to finish that one out." That prompted a discussion about retirement - my office has four "professionals" three of the four will be retired in less than four years. And we really have no succession plan.

Hence this weeks Sunday Five - retirement

  1. Did you or are you planning for retirement?
  2. Did or does you work have a plan for who would carry on the work after you?
  3. Do you, or are you worried that you will miss work?
  4. Do you, or do you plan to work part time after retirement?
  5. Given the free time of retirement, what one thing do you want to do more of?
My Answers:

  1. Did you or are you planning for retirement? August 1, 2023, I have been saving since 1988.
  2. Did or does your work have a plan for who would carry on the work after you? Not a clue.
  3. Do you, or are you worried that you will miss work? The closer I get, the less I think about this, there will be some adjustments, but I think I will find things to fill my time.
  4. Do you, or do you plan to work part time after retirement? There are a few things I would like to do.
  5. Given the free time of retirement, what one thing do you want to do more of? Travel.

  4. Did you or are you planning for retirement? I retired (early) in 2008, partly due to health issues and partly due to a horrible boss who made my life a living hell the last five years I worked.
Did or does you work have a plan for who would carry on the work after you? I was a school librarian. They hired a replacement within a couple of weeks who would start in the fall.
Do you, or are you worried that you will miss work? I still miss it but I'm glad I'm not around to deal with helicopter parents who want instant gratification.
Do you, or do you plan to work part time after retirement? Just volunteer work.
Given the free time of retirement, what one thing do you want to do more of? We wanted to travel, and we did for the first several years, but health issues have put a stop to that.

    1. One of the reasons I have set the date I have, is to increase the odds that we can do some of the travel while it is easiest.
