Sunday Five - Public Transit old and new

One of the reasons I want to live in the DC area, was to have access to a mass transit system, so I would not have to cuss in traffic every day.  I love it, the last time I drove to the office was May 4th, 2015, not that I am counting or anything.

1: The top picture is one of the older Metrorail cars with carpeting, the bottom picture is a newer car with hard surface flooring. Should they have kept the carpet?
2: Facing forward or facing backwards, does it matter to you?
3: If you had (or have) access to a rail system, would you continue to drive or take the trains?
4: Do you like the old color scheme or the new color scheme?
5: How is the traffic where you live?

My answers:
1: The top picture is one of the older Metrorail cars with carpeting, the bottom picture is a newer car with hard surface flooring. Should they have kept the carpet? I was a fan of the carpet, but I have to admit the hard surface floor are cleaner.
2: Facing forward or facing backwards, does it matter to you? Either way these days.
3: If you had (or have) access to a rail system, would you continue to drive or take the trains?  I take the train if it is going near where I need to be.
4: Do you like the old color scheme or the new color scheme? I liked the warmer colors.
5: How is the traffic where you live? Terrible.

Please leave your answer in the comments.

  1. 1: the carpet was ALWAYS ugly!

    2: doesn't matter

3: I have access to septa to get to work. however, I would have to go into the city to change trains; might take me 1.5 hours. I live 7.5 miles from work; takes me 15 minutes, so driving is the better option.

    4: new; FABU!

5: not too bad for a work commute; RTG and I work in the burbs.

    1. I don't like the carpet and for commuter trains, I think it is inappropriate.
    2. I prefer forward but don't mind backwards. Not so keen on sideways.
    3. Trains every time.
    4. I prefer the newer colour scheme.
    5. Traffic here is horrible.

It is rather like that here now too. You can't be choosy.

  3. 1) Prefer the hard floor, cleaner.
    2) I prefer moving forward.
    3) I would prefer a train however our city just built a 2 billion dollar system that completely collapses every single day and people are losing their jobs because they can't get to work, so car it is!!!
    4) I love blue so I prefer the new color.
    5) Traffic is not bad here compared to other cities, I'm lucky in that I mostly go against traffic so my way has a lot less traffic.

    1. The people losing jobs, should be those who can't make the system work.

  4. 1: The top picture is one of the older Metrorail cars with carpeting, the bottom picture is a newer car with hard surface flooring. Should they have kept the carpet? No. Impractical.
2: Facing forward or facing backwards, does it matter to you? Forward preferably. But can do either and often go backwards because SG can’t.
3: If you had (or have) access to a rail system, would you continue to drive or take the trains? I use the train here as often as I can.
4: Do you like the old color scheme or the new color scheme? No preference.
5: How is the traffic where you live? Málaga can be very unpleasant to navigate at times. But not the traffic density of D.C.

    1. The original carpets were wool, it was in the DOT approved specifications, it took years to change the fiber type when wool became hard to source.

  5. 1: The top picture is one of the older Metrorail cars with carpeting, the bottom picture is a newer car with hard surface flooring. Should they have kept the carpet? No, hard surface flooring seems more sanitary and easy to clean.
2: Facing forward or facing backwards, does it matter to you? I kind of like sitting on the side benches.
3: If you had (or have) access to a rail system, would you continue to drive or take the trains? I've never had access to a rail system where I've lived, but I used the SBahn frequently when I lived in Germany and the rail system in London when I could get down into the platform area. Sometimes both the elevator and escalators wouldn't be working in London.
4: Do you like the old color scheme or the new color scheme? The new.
5: How is the traffic where you live? My suburb of Indianapolis isn't too bad, but rush hour into or out of Indy proper is a nightmare.
