The Sunday Five: Imagine the Rest of The Story

1: Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally?

2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion?

3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers?

4: Describe the person who placed them here?

5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you?

My answers:

1: Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? I think the flowers were left behind intentionally, we do that.

2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? People carry flowers like this for weddings and funerals, I suspect this was spreading the cremains of a loved one in the river, a sad occasion where we leave flowers behind.

3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers?  I think they are left there on purpose, to brighten the place after a solemn event.

4: Describe the person who placed them here?  I suspect these were left behind by the daughter or granddaughter, I see her in a flowing skirt and simple blouse, with her long dark hair tied back.

5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you? These should be left, time, the sun and the wind will make them a part of the landscape.

This is a simple exercise in creative writing. Feel free to follow the prompts or to spin a narrative in your own style.  Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. Your story was so beautiful and mine will never live up to it. I'll give it the ol' community college try, though.
    1. The flowers were left by accident. Dude was surprised by a bee.
    2. It was a very sad occasion. Dude was stung by the bee.
    3. No one will look for the flowers. They're visiting their loved one (aka Dude) in the local hospital. Dude's highly allergic to bees.
    4. Dude is a bit of a dim bulb. Honestly, who carries around flowers when deathly allergic to bees? Should've stuck with artificial flowers. He was wearing a red hat, so there's that.
    5. I'd leave them. Free meal or whatever for the bees. Sharing is caring and all that.

Sorry. These are my dark months and I'm a little punch drunk. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

    2. After reading all of these, I've come to the conclusion that my thinking is a bit warped (except for Will Jay's, maybe). Runs in the family. My youngest sister's big toe was amputated last week. She's been missing it. She's been dreaming that it's walking the streets with one of those cartoon hobo stick things trying to find his way home. I don't know why she calls her toes he. Didn't ask. I told her that she was confused. That was the piggy that went to market. She laughed her butt off. We now have a running narrative about the toe's adventures wandering around San Diego. She's probably on good pain relievers. I have no excuse.

    3. I hope she recovers well, and that her toe finds peace.

  2. I'm with Deedles. There must be something in the air...
    1. Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? Both. It was a date gone horribly wrong. JD Vance or Stephen Miller must be dating again.
2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? It was a frightening nightmare. One or both parties ran in terror from the site screaming.
3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers? Not on your life.
4: Describe the person who placed them here? The flowers were not placed. They were thrown into the air in fright and landed in their present location before the aforementioned screaming departure.
5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you? I ain't touching that. It is full of bad spirit.

  3. 1. Accidently. They would have otherwise be remembered and taken or trashed.
    2. I think happy.
    3. Probably not. They look as cheap and nasty as John Gray's shoes.
    4. A well meaning young man.
    5. Chuck them into the water below. Maybe some fish will find them appetising.

  4. 1: Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? Intentionally.
2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? Sad. He brought them to apologize for his asshole behavior and she said flowers wouldn’t make up for it.
3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers? Someone else already took them and will take credit for them when they’re brought home.
4: Describe the person who placed them here? A macho jerk.
5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you? I’d probably leave them there.

    1. All men are assholes, the question is to what degree.

  5. Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? I felt by accident. There was probably a photo opt, followed by talking and then left them in all the excitement.

Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? I sense a happy one. The way the flowers are wrapped around the stems, that is mostly done like that for weddings, rehearsal dinners or a religious event. Sometimes a funeral, but not common anymore for funerals. Most flowers for funerals anymore are the casket sprays or full-on arrangements from guest.

Will someone come back looking for the flowers? Probably not. Unless they can retrace their steps, provided they weren't drinking.

Describe the person who placed them here? Someone who loved the flowers and had fun at the event, but then got all sidetracked in talking and taking selfies and other pictures. I know, because I do that.

Would you leave them there, or take them with you? Leave them there in case the person does come back...they'd be surprised to find their still there.

  6. The spirits are giving me mixed signals ...

1: Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? Accidentally; a new bride set them down while she fixed her hair.
2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? Now the spirits say it was a spot where two lovers met and one has recently passed; ashes were scattered, and the flowers left behind as a memory.
3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers? I don't think so ...
4: Describe the person who placed them here? An elderly woman, quite loved in life and quite sad knowing her mate of many years is no longer with her.
5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you? Oh I would leave them; they don't belong to me.

  7. 1: Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? Intentionally
2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? Sad
3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers? No. They have been left in honour and in memory of somebody who has gone.
4: Describe the person who placed them here? A close relation of the person who has gone. Probably a woman as women are usually more likely to use bunches of flowers to speak for them. Her face betrays her sense of loss - the lines and the dullness in her eyes. She is wrapped up warm in a houndstooth tweed coat. She is a mother or a lover, a wife or a sister of he who has gone.
5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you? Of course I would leave them. Taking them would be rather like desecrating a grave.

  8. 1. Intentionally
    2. Turned out sad. He proposed and she said no.
    3. No - they stomped off going separate ways.
    4. Now "ex" boyfriend.
    5. Leave them.

  9. 1: Were these left on the bench by accident or intentionally? A very elderly man was visiting his home town and decided to leave these flowers on the spot where he proposed to his wife some 55 years ago.
2: Was it a happy occasion or a sad occasion? It was both happy and sad because he was thinking of all the happy years they spent together but he was in this town for her memorial service.
3: Will someone come back looking for the flowers? No, they were meant to remain there.
4: Describe the person who placed them here? He is about 87 years old and clean shaven with wavy gray hair. The stiffness in his knees makes him get up from the bench slowly but once he's up he can walk away with ease.
5: Would you leave them there, or take them with you? No, I would leave them there and just look at them and think about the passage of time.
