I love train travel. Now that I'm in Harrisburg I can take the train to Philly also. It's nice to leave the "driving " up to others while we can relax. And you two one day must do the Orient Express.
From here to New York, it really is the fastest way to get there and back, for longer trips you need to make the journey the destination, or flying wins out.
I too love train travel, short and longer distance. I've watched all the classic Amtrak train trips in the US via YouTube and while they don't and aren't designed to compete with air travel, they are simply marvellous trips to take. Who would have thought the train through Colorado could have such stunning scenery!
There is an Amtrak route that crosses Montana in the northern Rockies, through Glacier National Park, I want to ride that one. I think when Mike Downie did, they ended up going though in the Dark. He is doing a new ten part across the USA trip.https://www.youtube.com/c/DownieLive
I enjoy trains. I've only ridden on one once (amusement park trains excluded). A little over forty years ago, we took our toddlers on a trip from San Diego to San Francisco. It was a lot of fun. My sister and a couple of older friends came along. We played the heck out of Uno. This is the only Arlo Guthrie song I like; in that it doesn't make me want to clear up his nasal congestion :)

ReplyDeleteCloser to home would be Harrisburg
DeleteI, too, love train travel. Every time I’m on a train, Simon & Garfunkel play in my head. Every time. I’m sittin’ in a railway station...
ReplyDeleteGreat one, I hadn't thought of that one
DeleteI have long wanted to travel by train but it's always seemed kind of a waste for a long trip. I should look into closer spots and start there.

DeleteI love that song! I didn't know Steve Goodman wrote it. I always assumed Arlo Guthrie did. So I learned something new today, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThere is a recording of it where Arlo Guthrie tells the story of how the composer got his attention to listen to it the first time.
DeleteI do enjoy hearing Arlo sing.
ReplyDeleteA nice ballad

It is nice to be able to move. I just booked a 9 hour airline flight
DeleteOh David, I love you, but you are out of your cotton pickin' mind! Nine hours! My butt and legs have gotten numb just reading this! Enjoy.
DeleteI have a few more of trips like that left in me, before I say, NEVER AGAIN.
DeleteOh! How I enjoyed the train ride between Chicago to Ann Arbor! Do you know the word 'dwam'? I would go into them on Amtrak. Good memories there.
ReplyDeleteThat is about the right length, 2 hours or so.
