"Not all who wander, are lost" sometimes the goal is to meander, to just take a walk and follow the path to happiness. I know when I cease to exist there will still be piles of unfinished projects (if you saw my workspace you would understand the heaps of projects reference,) and files of articles that I just need to give one more edit. I am no longer rushing. I am stopping to smell the roses along the way.
The older I get, the more likely I am to plan travel, that has unplanned days. Somedays I just want to wander without an agenda. The goal, is to do go in whatever direction the fates take me, and to see what joys are there to be enjoyed. Where I am going, is wherever life takes me that day.
Recently I had a bunch of projects competing for my attention. Really more than I should have said yes to. Several of them are moving forward or finished. One I have decided will be for next spring, not this fall. Working on the arts calendar for next year, I am going to include a couple of lower impact shows, shows that take a lot less work to produce, and still fill the gallery with awe and wonder. Sometimes setting goals, needs to include a goal of doing less.
I can remember back in the late 1980's - I know a long time ago - putting in my written goals for the year - submitted to my boss - to have at least one day during the year when I didn't leave the house. Between work, and college, and running, and the gym (five mornings a week at 6:00AM, my life as perpetual motion for a few years.) It is important to look at the balance of your time, and set goals to bring balance to your life.
And now in my post-paid employment life, I am still adjusting those goals, so I know where I am going.
I’ve always been less goal-oriented than you, which perhaps might explain my random, roaming life.
ReplyDeleteYou have such great walks
DeleteI can't say I am envious at someone having goals as it's never been the way I've lived my life. My ultimate goal is to continue to live my life as I have.
ReplyDeleteA noble goal.
DeleteI make tentative plans and goals and then follow a path that may get those plans done and goals accomplished. Or not. Sure some things you must do, but others can be skipped, I just need to know the difference.
ReplyDeleteTo quote a song from our youth, "know when to hold em, know when to fold em." Sometimes the great accomplishment is knowing when to change direction.
DeleteThese days I just do what I want to do and enjoy life as much as I can. This stage of my life is the balance to my younger stage when I was incredibly, single-mindedly driven and focused. Been there, done that, don't need to do it any more.
ReplyDeleteBeing driven, got us where we are, so we can slow down and enjoy the ride.
DeleteWise Poopsie, wise! In life, being driven and being run over are astonishing close to each other.
ReplyDeleteI have certainly been run over a few times.
Delete"Not all who wander are lost..." One of my favorite sayings! It's a great way to explore and find unexpected gems.
ReplyDeleteI should go out for a wander this afternoon.
DeleteOn my very first trip to Europe back in 1985, I had no plan at all. Just my airline ticket. I was happy with that but the friend I went with didn't like it so much. I still go without much of a plan. I like deciding in the morning where I'll go and what I'll do.
ReplyDeleteYou always find the most interesting places.
DeleteI'm a bit busier with family duties right now but I still find time to browse on the computer, read mysteries, and watch TV in the evening. Also I try to get out for a walk every day that I can. I'm so glad to be retired!
ReplyDeleteThe best years of our life.
