My World of Wonders: Wednesday June 3, 2026

What about the day? My mother's birthday was June 3rd, or was it the 4th, over 60 years of marriage my father never remembered it exactly. She would be 99 this week, if she were still alive.

What about this year? My grandparents on my father's side, were married in August of 1926, I have five of the six chairs from a dining room set that they bought before they were married, those chairs are 100 years old this summer.

What have I been up to in the kitchen? Oh my, I poached a chicken yielding chicken stock, and chicken for a pie (think shepherds pie but made with chopped chicken,) I baked bread, made pastry and a lemon tart with homemade lemon curd. A simple dinner of smoked sausage, baked beans, and coleslaw. Swiss steak and roast potatoes. Chicken stuffed with ham and cheese, rice and salad with homemade vinaigrette.

Who have a talked with? Paul, Amy, Susan, Giuseppe, my Sweet Bear, Ana, Veronica, Jon, Joan, Warren, Marcel, Erica, Izzy, Scott.

What have I been reading? Roman Ivory, a historical novel. Diddly Squat The Farmers Dog,

What adventure am I planning? Travel for a conference at Syracuse in early October. We are going to do it as a road trip.

Where have I been this week? The library, the grocery store, the gas station, the farmers market, the treadmill at the gym, the pool deck for the outside pool, the indoor pool, into DC to my old office, and a long walk across town.

What to avoid when on the grand adventure? Anyplace being hyped by the "influencers." The business are easy to spot, people are standing in line, waiting to get in for "the best I have ever had anyplace" that someone decided to post about. Before we left friends emailed me the must go to restaurants and gelato shops. When they ask if I went there, the answer is simply we stopped at places that looked good, and had no wait to get in. Social Media influencers ruin great businesses by overwhelming them with crowds of people in search of the "best in a lifetime." Avoid those businesses like the plague.

  1. I am the kind of person that when "people" tell me I have to go somewhere, buy this shirt, get that bottle for my water, eat at this place. I purposely avoid all suggestions and go about life MY way.
Which is why I have never seen Titanic or any Tom Cruise movie after Risky Business or drink at Starbucks or carry around a water bottle as big as a backpack!

    1. I did enjoy the movie Titanic. But it is not for everyone. On the 2025 cruise, the ship passed over the wreck on the anniversary of the sinking.

  2. I have a post coming up you'll enjoy and I wondered when I was there if you'd ever been....just you wait.

  3. How wonderful that you have chairs from your grandparents. A link to the past, a remembrance for the present.

  4. I'm with you on the influencers. I avoid those places when possible. A road trip in New York in October should result in some very beautiful fall images. The trees should be full of color.

  6. The drive up to Syracuse should be good. I hope you take your time over it and share the driving. I expect that The Wicked Hamster drives like a bat out of hell, cackling like Dick Dastardly. Just yell, "SLOW DOWN!" every thirty seconds. Was Adolf Hitler an "influencer"?

    1. Plans are to not drive more than 3-4 hours in a day, my emotional outbursts disturb his driving. I learned to drive like my mother, shouting from the passenger seat.

  7. It seems to be a pretty good idea to avoid many of the trendy must-sees when you travel. The mobs! I haven’t been to Syracuse in about 100 years.

  8. I love the title and very concept of “social influencer.” They are a pox on Society!

Don’t forget to keep me posted on your Syracuse plans. I’d really like to make a meet up happen if possible.

Oh man! I am so late to the game, but I still wanna play

1: How many stuffed animals do you have?

HAHAHA! I probably still have 100+. I had twice as many up until a few months ago when I gave half of them away. Keep in mind, I have a husband and a bf that indulge my passions.

2: Do you give them names?

I have a handful of giraffes that have names that stuck. But the majority of them don’t have names because there’s no way I could keep up with that. My other plush friends are various superhero related ones (Krypto, Ace the Bat Hound, Chip, etc.) or Christmas ones (Tigger, Pooh, Eeyore, etc.) so they come with their own name.

3: Do you have any from childhood?

Sadly, no. But I distinctly remember three of my favorites from my child: A small panda teddy bear that played music, an elephant with a homemade nose and ears that someone attached to him and a llama with purple eye eyelids, and huge eye lashes. I honestly have no idea what happened to them.

4: When was the last time you gave one as a gift?

Hmmm. Probably within the last year. Stuffed animals are still my favorite way to let my friends know I care about them. I think the last one I gave to a friend was a glittery rainbow giraffe, which he named Princess Percocet.

5: Do you have a favorite stuffed animal?

That’s a tough one. I have a couple of favorite giraffes. One is named Morpheus because he was a gift from Jeffrey and I got him while I was on morphine and very happy. Another is named Abacus because that’s the store I got him in. Another is name Sassy (because that’s the name on his tummy) and I think you can imagine why that that’s one of my favorites. As we downsize these three and a handful of others will stay with us. The rest, I hope to gift to other people as a sign of my affection.
