Friday Rant: Stop the Insanity

Warning, I am going to talk about the news and get political, if this is a trigger for you protect yourself and come back tomorrow. I promise to be better.

Government needs to get out of the murder business.  You don't end murder, by murdering your own citizens.  People commit some very horrible crimes. Millennia of the death penalty has not changed this.

And now Tennessee botches an execution, apparently for the SECOND TIME THIS YEAR. The latest was given two "lethal" injections, and an hour later was still breathing, still snoring, and was taken to the hospital.  The person she murdered, died with more comfort. I will go beyond we need to find a better way to kill people, we have lots of effective ways to murder people, the Government needs to set an example of good behavior and end the Death Penalty. It is not a deterrent, it does not rehabilitate anyone. If murder is wrong, it is wrong for the government to commit murder. Period. All of the god fearing quasi Christians in government should burn in their hell for allowing this travesty to continue.

What about redemption, turning the other cheek, the concept of no one being without sin, do they fail to understand. Revenge and retribution only feed the anger and hurt.

So what do we do with persons who have committed horrible crimes? Help them to live a better life. The prison system calls itself the Correctional System, it needs to provide an environment and support to help people learn to live in a civilized society. Few people are truly beyond hope.  We need to help people find a better way. And if we cannot, we still should not commit murder to try to discourage murder. If murder is wrong, it is wrong for the government to murder. Let alone when it can't even get that right.

  1. I’m with you! And thanks for understanding that some people are just so emotionally overloaded that they might not want to read this.

    1. I assess my mental health, before reading the news each day. Somedays I just can't read it.

  2. Murder by the state. Humane killing has been around for hundreds of years, guillotine and shooting to name two. Whatever that woman did, no one deserves such a non death. She made have had no empathy when she tortured and killed, but that doesn't mean decent people should act in the same way.

    1. This was a disaster in many ways, and apparently the second time this year that Tennessee has done this. It is time to stop.

  3. I have long been an anti-death penalty person, attending many protests on Alcatraz back in the day to voice my opinion.
Lock them up for life, no parole, no easy prison, no nothing.
When someone gets the death penalty they have decades of appeals in front of them; give them life and it's a different story.
If murder is a crime then even state sanctioned murder is a crime.

    1. If it is an eye for an eye, when to execute the executioner?

    2. Exactly. Plus the state executes in the name of the people of the state, but nobody asked my opinion.

PS South Carolina just reinstated the firing squad. Seriously.

  4. Canada abolished the death penalty in our Criminal Code in 1976. There was a public debate and parliamentary vote in 1987 about whether to reinstate the death penalty, but it did not succeed. The death penalty for military offences was abolished in 1998. As young lawyers, some friends and I participated in the 1987 campaign against reinstatement. Man, that was so long ago now!

    1. And well done. In December I am publishing an interview with a lawyer in Atlanta who did a pro-bono death penalty appeal, on review the Court ruled the death an accident and released the man from prison the day before Thanksgiving. (ABA Senior Lawyers Division Voice of Experience.)

  5. Well said! In Great Britain we abolished the death penalty in 1968 though earlier in the decade there were only eleven executions. Eleven too many in my opinion. My heart goes out to Christa Pike. Her case was so very tragic even before the botched execution attempt.

  6. An eye for an eye makes makes everyone blind.

  7. The sad part is the Correctional System doesnt work a lot of the time. Many are in and out so much. I wonder how many success stories there are? And then some commint crime to just get back in. There also need to be a program for when they come out. Many are in so long...they cany handle a regular life out of jail again...some even end badly with suicide. But Im not opposed to HWSNBN getting a triple dose by lethal injection. ILL make that an exception.

    1. There are some success stories, such as college degree programs in prison, that reduce recidivism rates substantially.
