The Sunday Five: No Talking Please

1: Where do you go for silence?

2: Do you have quiet neighbors?

3: What can you hear in the middle of the night?

4: Do you talk on your phone in public?

5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy?

My Answers:

1: Where do you go for silence? Anyplace at home is usually quiet

2: Do you have quiet neighbors? Yes, thankfully. We can hear people passing by in the hallway, but we have had good neighbors.

3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? Freight trains, the train tracks are a little over a mile away and most of the middle of the night traffic is freight.

4: Do you talk on your phone in public? Almost never, but then I seldom talk on the phone.

5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Yes, restaurants, stores, the pool Sunday afternoon.

Please share your answers in the comments.

  1. 1. My bedroom for silence, although there is always white noise.
    2. Yes, and aside from one incident in the 1980s, I've always had quiet neighbours.
    3. Just white noise that barely penetrates, and emergency vehicles, the sirens being loud enough to penetrate if I'm awake, but not if I'm asleep (that's a guess. I've never been woken by sirens).
    4. Rarely, and if so, very quietly and briefly.
    5. Left or asked to be moved, yes.

  2. 1. We have a small library in the house. That is where I go.
    2. Mostly. A few times a year, they have friends over the in backyard with instruments for a sing-a-long.
    3. Freight trains. Sometimes the light rail system. Now and then a siren.
    4. Not unless an emergency.
    5. Yes. Last one was a niece's wedding reception. The "kids" (30 and up) were having fun. The must dos were over and it became a party. I was out.

  3. 1: Where do you go for silence? As close to a noisy fountain as I can. That white noise is my silence.
2: Do you have quiet neighbors? Yes.
3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? Sometimes street traffic but very faintly through the good windows.
4: Do you talk on your phone in public? Only if I have to, and I remove myself from the crowd and talk quietly.
5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Oh, yes.

  4. 1: Where do you go for silence? In the nearby countryside. Sometimes I drive up to Whirlowbrook Park where I sit on a bench reading my book of choice. I need silence for quality reading time.
2: Do you have quiet neighbors? Yes. On both sides though the fellow to the north sometimes likes to hammer without forewarning when embarked upon DIY projects.
    P.S. "neighbours" has a "u" in it!
3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? Maybe a fox yowling in the gardens behind us. Maybe an owl. Maybe the wind or rain. Maybe my wife's sleep noises.
4: Do you talk on your phone in public? The public never descend upon our house when I am making a phone call. Also the cord of the phone only stretches for about one yard - so the answer is "no". By the way, I think that anybody found talking on the phone in public should be sent to the penal colony at Mar-a-Lago - a fate worse than death.
5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Yes I have. I am a fan of Peace and Quiet. They are my favourite rock duo.

  5. 1: Where do you go for silence? Home, a quiet corner.
2: Do you have quiet neighbors? For the most part.
3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? Dogs barking, the rain, some wind, a snore from the other side of the bed and cats purring.
4: Do you talk on your phone in public? Rarely. And I move somewhere quiet.
5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Restaurants every so often.

  6. 1. A favourite place of silence is to go walking in botanical gardens or parks.
    2. Quiet neighbours? It varies as tenants come and go. For the most part, it's not too bad.
    3. In the winter, I hear snowplows clearing the streets. In the summer (with windows open), I hear all the police car and fire truck sirens. Also souped up cars.
    4. I almost never talk on my phone in public.
    5. I will leave a venue if it's too noisy, yes. Some restaurants these days are unbearable but if I've ordered food, I'll wait.

  9. 1: Where do you go for silence? Outside, whether it's my patio, a walk, a park.
2: Do you have quiet neighbors? Yes.
3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? Owls, cars on the major road 3 blocks away, train whistles, dogs barking.
4: Do you talk on your phone in public? No. On the occasion when I answer my phone in public, I tell the caller I will call them back.
5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Oh yes. When I can't hear to have a conversation or have to shout to talk, it's time to leave. This happened frequently when we were at Todd's conference events and we've left restaurants because of the noise level.

  10. 1: Where do you go for silence? For a walk around the neighborhood.
2: Do you have quiet neighbors? Yes for the most part. Living in a multi-housing unit, there will always be some noise but I have great neighbors around me.
3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? The air/heat units humming away.
4: Do you talk on your phone in public? No, never unless its an emergency.
5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Oh yes.

  11. 1: Where do you go for silence? Home
2: Do you have quiet neighbors? Yes, TBTG! When my across the back fence neighbors were still alive I was guaranteed two incidents/year (probably Mothers' Day or Labor Day) of listening to their blowhard son in law opining at their party setup in the back yard. Now that Henrietta and Karl are no longer with us, the house has been sold and the new neighbor is quiet.
3: What can you hear in the middle of the night? The wind mostly but if it is a very clear and still night sometimes train whistles, and the freeway. Upon occasion if things in the neighborhood get especially lively I'll hear police helicopters.
4: Do you talk on your phone in public? Rarely. I try to avoid this and take the call in a quieter and more private space.
5: Have you ever left someplace because it was too noisy? Can't remember, but I probably have.

    1. We rarely hear helicopters, even less so since the army flew into an American Airlines flight 13 months ago.
