I know very little about children, I was the youngest child, we lived in an isolated location, and I grew up without children around, I have never had children around. Hence a few questions?
1: What is a good gift for a one year old?
2: When should I expect a baby to start to know who I am?
3: How do you know what size T-shirt to buy for a baby, and why are they $25?
4: At what age should a child get their first phone?
5: Should I have bought the bagpipes for my nephew's one year old?
My Answers - well sort of I am clueless.
1: What is a good gift for a one year old? I sent books.
2: When should I expect a baby to start to know who I am? No idea.
3: How do you know what size T-shirt to buy for a baby, and why are they $25? I am shocked by the prices.
4: At what age should a child get their first phone? About 25 I think.
5: Should I have bought the bagpipes for my nephew's one year old? I didn't. My father threatened bodily injury on anyone who bought his kids drums, imagine how he would have felt about bagpipes.
Please have fun and share your answers in the comments.
1: What is a good gift for a one year old? Zwieback. At that age it is possible that anything could be put in the mouth and all food has play value. Don't overthink this.
ReplyDelete2: When should I expect a baby to start to know who I am? When s/he can understand their parents' description of who you are and that you are not some scary random stranger.
3: How do you know what size T-shirt to buy for a baby, and why are they $25? a) ask the parents for measurements/weight (and err on the large size because the odds are that the baby will grow rather than shrink) and b) because merchandisers know that friends and family will pay that if they do not sew.
4: At what age should a child get their first phone? Not necessarily at a set age, however whenever the child has enough autonomy to be somewhat self sufficient that they will need to check in with an adult. I noticed that this occurred for my friends when the kids started junior high/middle school and were responsible for getting themselves to school.
5: Should I have bought the bagpipes for my nephew's one year old? Maybe. It all depends upon how you feel about your nephew. If you really disapprove of him, wait a few more years and get your great nephew a full percussion and drum set.

Thanks for the very thought out answers.
Delete1. Useful rather than pretty clothing would rarely be wrong. If you can capture both, fine.
ReplyDelete2. By four they should have you planted in the memory. They will remember you better if it is reinforced by seeing photos of you. The medium term memories will remember you if you see them at times.
3. If they are of average build, here at least 'Size 0' for under 1. Size 1 for 1 to 2 years of age, and so forth. If in doubt, go a size over. They will grow into the item. Get over the price. You don't want to be thought of as cheap, and think what you've saved by not having little varmints around. If it is a nice looking item and they are not wearing it the next time you see them, have nothing more to do with the family.
4. A dumb phone at 12. A smart phone at 16.
5. It depends how much you hate the parents.
But I am the cheap uncle!
Delete1: What is a good gift for a one year old? For a 1-year-old, I either buy something practical, like clothes, or a simple toy.
ReplyDelete2: When should I expect a baby to start to know who I am? I don’t know what the official word is on this, but if you see a baby often, they know you very quickly. Most recently, our friends son met us when he was 11 months old and readily recognized us within a month.
3: How do you know what size T-shirt to buy for a baby, and why are they $25? You go by age (and ask the parents).
4: At what age should a child get their first phone? So many factors.
5: Should I have bought the bagpipes for my nephew's one year old? No. You don’t want to THAT relative. If the child visited you regularly, you could keep bagpipes at YOUR house for him. My parents’ friends bought me a drum set when I was 5. I loved it. Oddly I found them ripped one day soon after. When I was in my 40s, my mother said my father had done it.
I see him about once a year.
Delete1. i have no idea. Even niece / nephew land it's been 25 years since I've purchased one.
ReplyDelete2. I'm thinking 6-8 months. Sooner if you're the parent.
3. I don't know how. I've purchased things FAR too large in the past.
4. 23? Friends of ours got one for their 8 yo grandchild. It just plays games, but doesn't make calls. It has limited functionality.
5. I have purposefully purchased noise-inducing gifts just to annoy the fuck out of my sisters.
The fun uncle!
Delete1: What is a good gift for a one year old? Another one year old??
ReplyDelete2: When should I expect a baby to start to know who I am? I think it depends on how often you see them; sooner if more, later if less.
3: How do you know what size T-shirt to buy for a baby, and why are they $25? Buy a size too big so they can grow into it. Buy their current size and it'll last about a month. I blame tariffs for the prices. 😁
4: At what age should a child get their first phone? Teenager.
5: Should I have bought the bagpipes for my nephew's one year old? If you never want to see them again, then yes.
They may be working on baby #2.
DeleteThe baby would have LOVED the bagpipes.
ReplyDeleteYes!
Delete1: What is a good gift for a one year old? Possibly a stuffed toy.
ReplyDelete2: When should I expect a baby to start to know who I am? I have no idea.
3: How do you know what size T-shirt to buy for a baby, and why are they $25? I'd just ask someone and that cost is crazy.
4: At what age should a child get their first phone? I like your answer.
5: Should I have bought the bagpipes for my nephew's one year old? No, I think that might have been a step too far.
Someone let me know you can order bagpipes on Amazon.
Delete1. Books was a good choice you made.
ReplyDelete2. Depends how often you see them.
3. Always buy too big so they can grow into them. Don't shop at expensive stores. I've never paid $25 for a kid's t shirt.
4. Teenagers will probably want one.
5. NO!
I see toddlers in strollers with smartphones.
DeleteMost little ones like the boxes the item came in.
