Getting old is fabulous.
We have slowed down, and in doing so, we see more - experience more of what we are passing through.
People are kinder to older adults. Doors get held open, people address me as "sir," they listen to my sometimes rambling stories.
Less is expected of me, and people are pleasantly surprised to find that I am not half as daft as I look.
I have been there, done that, and learned what is unlikely to work.
When I fear that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, I am comforted to know I am unlikely to be here for another 20 years to experience it. I remind myself that I have more yesterdays than tomorrows (thank you Ron for that phrase.) It brings me comfort to know my discomfort will end in a few years.
I refuse to push back against age. No hair color, no wrinkle creams, no hair growth garbage. It has taken me years to get here. I show my scars, greying hair (what little there is left of it,) and wrinkles with pride. Battle scars from decades of staying alive.
At my age, if I don't want to, I simply say, I don't and won't. Simple as that.
I don't worry about being fashionable, I dress the way I want to. I may not wear the uniform of the old, I may not wear the latest fashion trend. What I wear is what brings me comfort, old or new.
My time is mine. I can do what I want to do, when I want to do it.
I am not the least bit shy about using the senior discounts. The senior discount on the Eurostar covered the cost of upgrading to premium seats. Many museums and attractions offer old age discounts.
Being old, is fabulous.
I hope you’re seeing some wonderful sights that bring back memories of your grandmother.
ReplyDeleteMuch more to see, than our stamina will allow.
DeleteThe old people discounts are great, but here at anywhere official, overseas older people are not recognised. From the way you wrote it, some people are uncomfortable about total strangers knowing they are of a certain age?
ReplyDeleteSometimes I would really like to run to catch a public transport vehicle, but those days have passed. It doesn't worry me too much.
I always look or ask on senior discounts.
DeleteYou make some very positive points!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are enjoying the sights in London. There is so much to see.
And it is a holiday weekend, and the city is unusually crowded.
DeleteThere is nothing stopping old age except for the day one dies and at this point in my life it's wonderful to enjoy the days on my own terms. Your points are so positive and much appreciated. 10 more days in the UK...enjoy each fabulous day!
ReplyDeleteWe think of death as an old person issue, but people die at all ages. We are trying to fill the years we have with life.
DeleteYour attitude to aging is exactly the same as mine! So of course, that makes you 100% correct!
ReplyDeleteIt is always nice to be correct.
DeleteI agree with you, David.
ReplyDeleteSomeday, if we are lucky enough to live long enough, we will all be old.
DeleteI'm old already! ;)
DeleteI agree completely. As my father used to say about aging, "Consider the alternative."
ReplyDeleteEnjoy getting old, it beats not doing so,
DeleteI don't care for either term young or old.
ReplyDeleteAgeless.
DeleteEnjoy it as long as you can.
ReplyDeleteWhen it is no longer fun, will we want to keep doing this?
DeleteYou may not do it but will look back either with regret or (the correct way) with satisfaction with the fond memories.
DeleteI too am at that age of feeling "I won't be here to see it" for many of the worries today.
