I've never thought about the word 'lobbying', but I now understand.

DeleteI recall the hookers in a hotel once. I think their term of "lobbying" meant something different altogether.

DeleteThe Willard Hotel link to the term "lobbying" makes for a nice story but... "The term "lobbying" originated in the British Parliament, where people would meet with members of Parliament in the lobby before and after debates."

DeleteOooooo! An etymology question; I'm on it! Combining data from Webster's and the OED, it appears that the verb lobby and the noun lobbyist have different origins. The verb does indeed go way back to the English parliament. But those who did so were called "lobby members" or some such. The word "lobbyist" for such folk is far more recent, and does appear to go back to Grant and the Willard Hotel.
