Our calendar is based on the rotation of the planets, the regularity and predictability of the sunrise and sunset, and of the seasons. One day flows into the next. The division into weeks, hours, months, the arbitrary division into 24 hours in a day, are constructs of the human mind, but the number of days in the year are based on the number of sunrises and sunsets in a rotation around the sun. We say it is the year 2024, because we have no idea when the universe settled into this rotation and humans felt a need to organize and structure time.
In way, every day is the beginning of a new rotation, from that spot in the rotation. One theory is that the date for New Year was picked to give hope in the darkness of winter. Is New Year's day just another day, or a bridge from one rotation to the next? Many things continue from yesterday, to today, to tomorrow. But it is also an opportunity for new beginnings, just as sunrise signals new opportunities.
Let's try to leave the past in the past, start anew today, move boldly into the new year. Cross that bridge, and not look back.
A very happy new year. I wonder who did invent clock time as we now know it.
ReplyDeleteWhy not ten hours a day, or 100?
DeleteI was inclined to go for a ten hour day, until I remember driving in England and how much longer a trip seemed to take when it was posted in miles rather than kilometres.

DeleteCongratulations on your award! I like to think Time has bridges that can be crossed simply by travelling far enough to enter another time zone.
ReplyDeleteThere was a news post, a flight that left Japan just after Midnight on January 1, 2024, and landed in Los Angeles before Midnight on December 31, 2023.
