Borough Market

When I booked the hotel for London in early March, I was returning to a hotel we had stayed in before, near the Borough Market.  The current market was established by an act of Parliament in 1754 (older than the United States as a country.) Markets have operated on the location for 1,000 years.  It is a truly amazing city market.  There is a remarkable selection of fruit, vegetables, cheese, bakeries, and meats. Many vendors focus on ingredients, others on ready to eat hot and cold foods.  Something for everyone.

There are few of these in the world, the central market in Florence is another one.  I could live in an apartment across the street from a market like this with a nice kitchen, and smile everyday for the rest of my life.

Ready to go market shopping with me?

We have a good market nearby. I don't know why we don't go there. Of course the Borough Market was the scene of such of an awful killing spree.

    1. I don't think I have tried Drunken Goat, you could try a new cheese everyday for years. Neals Yard Dairy has a retail store in that market that is heavenly, there were a lot more cheese sellers this year than 12 years ago.

    2. Málaga has a couple of traditional, good, and fun markets. Fuengirola has two public markets. The central one is ugly and I find it very unpleasant. Ours is limited and in a contemporary, blah space. There are several excellent stalls inside, like Ana Crespillos produce market, but the space doesn't have the charm (nor variety) of those other markets -- except I find it much more pleasant than the interior of Fuengirola's central market. Sevilla had some truly wonderful markets. And Madrid.... Oh!

    3. Here there is a weekly open air market in Old Town Alexandria (been a market on that square since colonial times) and one in a parking low west of here on Sundays. The Eastern Market in DC, is mostly vendors and ready to eat food stalls. The Union Market is almost entirely restaurants and high end vendors.
