The Crap We Learned in School
So, George Washington didn't confess to chopping down a Cherry Tree, saying the infamous "I can not tell a lie." Here I am in the cherry blossoms at Mt Vernon (not GWs childhood home.)
The normal temperature of the human body falls into a range, not the exact 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit that we all had answer on a biology exam in school. My normal temperature is about 97.4.
When I was in the 4th grade, the science book said that we would run out of oil, by the time I was 20. How could the science book be wrong?
What did you learn in school, that has since been proven to not be true?

ReplyDelete"you have to learn geometry and algebra cause you will use it later in life" - WRONG!!!! I ain't a math person!!!!
to quote paul simon: "when I think back on all the crap I learned in high school..."
I was inspired by that line
DeleteDitto, Anne Marie, that was the first thing to come to my mind.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's a wonder I can think at all.
It is a great phrase
DeleteThat the electoral college is here to save us from unqualified candidates.
ReplyDeleteI went to part of high school in Michigan, and part in Florida. I learned to different reasons for the Civil War. Was slavery ended because it was inherently wrong, or because of a fear that it would give an economic advantage in the dawning industrial revolution?
DeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteTrigobloodynometry indeed?
As for the temperature thing - mine is rising as I type, I swear. As a former nurse, I must have taken thousands of temps and I can confirm that of course they come in a range. And 98.6 or 36 celcius is the TOP of the range.
I remember some years back joining a medical type list serve (remember them) in the very mistaken belief that I might be of some help. Ha! There was a bunch of idiots who were convinced they had some sort of tbyroid condition (they very clearly didn't) simply because their temperatures were 97 or so. When I tried to explain that that was simply on the low side of normal, all hell broke loose. They showed me various moronic bits of nonsense and got all their friends to join to explain that I was WRONG. I gave up and left.
At the beginning of medical school we were warned only a fraction of what we will learn will be 'true' by the time we graduate, but no one will know what that fraction will be.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. just about all I know/do etc. in my speciality 'did not exist' even 5-10 years ago.
The blog are the best that is extremely useful to keep.
ReplyDeleteI can share the ideas of the future as this is really what I was looking for,
I am very comfortable and pleased to come here. Thank you very much.
