The normal temperature of the human body falls into a range, not the exact 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit that we all had answer on a biology exam in school. My normal temperature is about 97.4.
When I was in the 4th grade, the science book said that we would run out of oil, by the time I was 20. How could the science book be wrong?
What did you learn in school, that has since been proven to not be true?

ReplyDeleteI went to part of high school in Michigan, and part in Florida. I learned to different reasons for the Civil War. Was slavery ended because it was inherently wrong, or because of a fear that it would give an economic advantage in the dawning industrial revolution?

As for the temperature thing - mine is rising as I type, I swear. As a former nurse, I must have taken thousands of temps and I can confirm that of course they come in a range. And 98.6 or 36 celcius is the TOP of the range.
I remember some years back joining a medical type list serve (remember them) in the very mistaken belief that I might be of some help. Ha! There was a bunch of idiots who were convinced they had some sort of tbyroid condition (they very clearly didn't) simply because their temperatures were 97 or so. When I tried to explain that that was simply on the low side of normal, all hell broke loose. They showed me various moronic bits of nonsense and got all their friends to join to explain that I was WRONG. I gave up and left.
At the beginning of medical school we were warned only a fraction of what we will learn will be 'true' by the time we graduate, but no one will know what that fraction will be.
