The Sunday Five: Veggies 26

1: What would you do with the turnips above?

2: Do you cook cauliflower?

3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own?

4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi?

5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes?

My answers:

1: What would you do with the turnips above?  Just one, peeled and cubed added to a soup or stew.

2: Do you cook cauliflower? I like it roasted or gratined.

3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? I slice my own, and think ill of people who are too lazy to slice a mushroom.

4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? I asked at the west end farmers market one day, and the advice was peel the outside, shred it like cabbage and make slaw, I did it is so good.

5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? At least the totes are reusable, I would prefer wood.

Please share your answers in the comments.

Bonus question: What is weird about the image above?

The spam filter is going nuts this today, I will rescue you as soon as I can.  All comments today have gone to spam.  Either Google is having a bad day, or the spammers are fighting back trying to get their garbage on our blogs.

  1. 1. Since I loathe turnips I would leave them where they are.
    2. I prefer cauliflower raw.
    3. I buy pre-sliced mushrooms and couldn't care less about others judging me .
    4. Who is Kohlrabi, and prepare him for what?
    5. I don't care one way or another.
That's some weird looking cauliflower, rosemary and cilantro you got there.

    1. I can remember when, farmers spent the cold months of winter building wood totes.

  3. 1: What would you do with the turnips above? I have never cooked with turnips. I really should try.

2: Do you cook cauliflower? Yes, cut into think 1/2-inch pieces and roasted with turmeric.

3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? I slice my own.

4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? I haven't; I'll add it, along with turnips, to the list.

5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? It does seem odd, but yes they are reusable, so ... ?

Bonus question: What is weird about the image above? The tags don't match the food? I buy cilantro every week ands none of that looks like cilantro or rosemary!

    1. And parsnips, roast them like carrots in the oven.

  4. 1: What would you do with the turnips above? I like turnips raw: peeled and a cut up with a sprinkle of salt.
2: Do you cook cauliflower? Yes, roasted, in a gratin, cauliflower and potato soup is tasty, too.
3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? Both.
4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? Yes. Again, I like it raw sprinkled with salt, added to slaw, or in a soup. Did you know that kohlrabi is related to cabbage?
5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? That seems like contradiction to the organic, save-the-earth philosophy, but plastic bins easier to store and clean and lighter to transport produce.
Bonus: Never have see rosemary and cilantro look like that!

    1. The tags are double sided, the other side was correct. I will have to try to soup.

  5. 1. Put them in the trash.
    2. I've roasted it. I've made buffalo cauliflower. But mostly I like it uncooked.
    3. I don't buy mushrooms. ick.
    4. Since I don't know what it is, I'm going with 'no'.
    5. Yes. In theory they're sustainable and will last years or decades for the use on a farm. Almost zero need to throw them out or replace them.

    1. I had mixed feelings on the plastic totes.

  6. 1: What would you do with the turnips above? give them names
2: Do you cook cauliflower? I'll let you do that
3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? I know there is a right answer to that one
4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? see above
5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? wood would be more natural, but also likely heavier, as would be any sort of metal--and also more expensive, so plastic seems to be the best alternative

  7. 1. I would cook them as a side dish -- cubed or mashed. I only eat turnips maybe once per year at most. And always, it seems, with a turkey dinner.
    2. I only cook cauliflower once in a blue moon. Roasted is best.
    3. If I need a lot of mushrooms for a recipe, I buy pre-sliced. But if I only need a few, I buy whole and slice them myself.
    4. Kohlrabi? Never prepared it. Have seen it in the stores though.
    5. Theoretically, they shouldn't leach chemicals into the produce unless they're cooking them in those totes, which they are not.

    1. I built a house one time, for a chemist who was studying chemical leaching in microwave ovens. His entire career had been on that one issue, his answer was only use glass containers. Take the frozen stuff out of the plastic and put it in glass.

  8. What would you do with the turnips above? I like to make a Buttered Turnip puree.

Do you cook cauliflower? Yes, and cream of cauliflower soup is one of my favorites.

Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? Slice my own. I just made a nice chicken puff pie last night that called for mushrooms.

Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? Can't say I have.

Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? As long as they are reusing them, then fine.

  9. 1: What would you do with the turnips above? My mother used to thinly slice them and soak them in a vinegar brine and then eat the slices as a snack. She also would cook them and mix them with mashed potatoes.
2: Do you cook cauliflower? Mostly I roast it.
3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? No, I slice my own.
4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? That's one I haven't tried.
5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? probably not but as you say at least they get used over and over.
The strange thing I see is that all the signs are wrong for the bins they are attached to.

    1. The signs were what caught my eye.

  10. 1. Chuck turnips in the bin.
    2. Yes, we cook cauliflower.
    3. Fresh whole mushrooms, but I don't eat them.
    4. I can't remember what it is and I don't think I've eaten it.
    5. A plastic tote is to carry what you buy away? Ideally no but it makes no difference to what you buy.

Yes, some serious mislabelling has happened.

    1. Kohlrabi looks like an alien invasion plant, kind of like cabbage, sweeter.

  11. 1: What would you do with the turnips above? Either hurl them at passing cars or peel them, chop into cubes and boil before draining, mashing and adding a knob of salted butter.
2: Do you cook cauliflower? Yes I do. I cook it quite regularly as cauliflower cheese.
3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? I always slice my own.
4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? Yes I have and I have grown it too. Slightly awkward to peel because of the knobbly bits.
5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? What is a tote? You mean a plastic box I presume? None of us are perfect and if the boxes are used over and over again then that's okay in my opinion.
    6. Bonus question - What's weird about this image? There are no dancing girls and the labelling is incorrect.

    1. No dancing men either, farmers come in all genders.

  12. 1: What would you do with the turnips above? Dice them with cubed carrots and stir fry them in some oil and soy sauce.
2: Do you cook cauliflower? only to puree them into mashed potatoes.
3: Do you buy pre-sliced mushrooms or slice your own? always sliced
4: Have you ever prepared Kohlrabi? no
5: Should an organic farm be using plastic totes? it is a bit odd isn't it.
