I read an article recently that said that people who engaged in an artistic activity, even if they are really bad at, experience better mental health, than those who do not. Music, drawing, painting, photography, creative writing, sculpture, jewelry making, sewing, needle arts - all appear to help us maintain better mental health.
Hence this weeks Sunday Five - Artistic Endeavors
1: When was the last time you created something for the joy of creating it?
2: Have you taken any formal classes?
3: What art would you like to start doing again?
4: Are there original creations of yours, hanging in your home or office?
5: Have you ever created something so terrible, that you trashed it?
My answers:
1: When was the last time you created something for the joy of creating it? The last painting was a couple of weeks ago, it is unfinished, and simply terrible.
2: Have you taken any formal classes? I took two art classes in college, a photography class and a silversmithing class.
3: What art would you like to start doing again? I want to start doing silver and metal work again.
4: Are there original creations of yours, hanging in your home or office? Yes, several.
5: Have you ever created something so terrible, that you trashed it? Yes, and a few are hidden in a dark corner where no one can see them.
Please share your answers in the comments.
1-I created a partial beauty of drag for a certain virtual pride event coming up.
ReplyDelete2-yes...drawing and painting.
3-drawing
4-No...only that of friends.
5-Oh he'll yes. Many a failed gin concoction.
Painting under the influence
DeleteI can confirm the beauty of #1! And in a week or so, you'll all see it!
Delete1: every time I cast on a new project on my knitting needles
ReplyDelete2: yes, at knitting conventions
3: play piano
4: I WEAR my art, baby!
5: oh gawd yasssss! many times.
I have seen auctioneers at house sales, pay people to take the piano away, unless they are really exotic, they can be hard to sell, easy to buy.
DeleteI wish I could answer in a meaningful way but essentially no to all.
ReplyDeleteYou write, you take photos.
Delete1: When was the last time you created something for the joy of creating it? I find art in everything: a great meal, a bunch of flowers, the way a room is designed, so I am always creating something just because.
ReplyDelete2: Have you taken any formal classes? I've taken art classes all through school and college; graphic design, drafting, too.
3: What art would you like to start doing again? I still sketch and draw and design, but I'd like to paint.
4: Are there original creations of yours, hanging in your home or office? I took an etching and print-making class many MANY years ago and used a photo of my grandmother's dog as the etching. I no longer have the prints, but I have the original metal etching plate which I really like.
5: Have you ever created something so terrible, that you trashed it? Oh yes. A thousand times yes.
Creativity frees your mind.
DeleteThese are all N/A to me. I'm reasonably creative in my head, it just doesn't translate physically.
ReplyDeleteYou are a wonderful writer, you should blog.
Delete1. Creating for the joy of creation -- Blogging is a creative outlet for me, so my last blog post?
ReplyDelete2. Formal classes -- I was taking art classes until the pandemic hit.
3. Start doing again -- I want to take more art classes. Also would like to do some cross-stitch again.
4. Original creations on walls -- No, I have my art in a portfolio instead.
5. Trashed terrible stuff? Oh yeah.
Time to show the world,
DeleteNo to them all. My seventh grade art teacher put down everything I tried in her 12 week class, and I never tried again. My only "creative" things are what I can do with a spreadsheet and creating pies. My cherry pies have been said to be magnificent.
ReplyDeleteMy husband, however, plays numerous instruments, has tatted and knit, done metal sculptures, faceted "gems", is doing water color right now, and many more.
One critical teacher, can set the course. The study would indicate that we should encourage artistic expression, even if it is bad. I had to mentors, a neighbor when I was a teenager who taught me to paint, and the professor in college. I told him one day, that he could teach art to the artistically handicapped.
DeleteI belong to a group we call the Art Challenge Group. We take turns setting a challenge topic and then meet to show our creations. I love it!
ReplyDelete1. I do it all the time. Mostly with photos. I manipulate and edit photos into something new entirely.
2. I took photography classes many, many years ago.
3. I would love to learn to paint. I've created paintings for my art challenge group but they aren't very good. I'd love to learn some techniques.
4. The walls of my apartment are covered with my works of art.
5. Yes, on more than one occasion.
You are very creative. Paint, even if it is not very good, it is your work.
Delete1: When was the last time you created something for the joy of creating it? Probably a daily endeavor for me.
ReplyDelete2: Have you taken any formal classes? Yes, and have a degree in art.
3: What art would you like to start doing again? a. Sculpture; b. etching
4: Are there original creations of yours, hanging in your home or office? Yes.
5: Have you ever created something so terrible, that you trashed it? Oh yeah! And, sadly, I've created wonderful things that I regret trashing because I decided either due to criticism at the time it was done or just a low point in my life years later that I had no talent.
You are very talented, and it shows.
Delete1: When was the last time you created something for the joy of creating it? this morning when I wrote a blog entry. I was quite delighted to compose it.

DeleteRegarding #4: I would argue that the Spo shirts hanging in your home are works of art as well.
