We were looking for breakfast, a block or two off Times Square, and came across this sign. The food was amazing, but things were not quite French. Turns out it is the best Belgian restaurant in New York, maybe in the United States, but people know what to expect in French food, Belgian food leaves them unsure.
Would you try it?
Without being unkind, and I probably am, the citizens of United States of the USA are not known for their geographical knowledge. French, Belgian, same same.
ReplyDeleteHow true!
Deleteagreed, andrew. many of us citizens are dumber than a box of rocks. but this restaurant looks tasty; I'd try it! AND I can point out belgium on a map! belgium is also known for its lace, chocolates, and beer.
ReplyDeleteI have been to France and Belgium (and the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Greece, UK, Austria (but not Australia) I went to the one without Kangaroos.
Deletethe Only Belgian restaurant I’ve ever been in was in Belgium... a really long time ago. But I DO love Belgian waffles!
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, I had a really great eggs Benedict.
DeleteYou bet I'd try it! All I can think of, though, is Hercule Poirot sniffily correcting people when they assumed he was French when he was really Belgian.
ReplyDeleteCultural assumptions can bring out pride in many people.
