Way We Were Wednesday - Cars in Time

My first car, I bought this 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal used in the fall of 1977, for about $1,800 from a Chrysler dealer in downtown Orlando.  It was big, and comfy, and probably had the odometer rolled back.  I drove it for a couple of years.

What was your first?

  1. Well, the first car I drove was my parent Audi. My first car I owned was a Volkswagen Jetta.

My grandfather had a vintage Citroen, which is where my love of them came from. Cars had style and grace then.

  3. My first car was a used Datsun 710. It eventually developed a bad case of the shimmy-shakes.

  4. These comments really took me down memory lane. My first car was a 1978 Mazda GLC. I loved it, although when I drove between NYC and Boston, I had to be going 70 at the bottom of a hill if I wanted to maintain 45 by the time I got to the top. I always wanted a Citroen in the '70s! I had a friend with a 1970-something Ford Pinto. After some years (15 or 20?), it wouldn't go in reverse. So she'd have to push it out of her garage before she could drive it. And, finally, I have a friend here who's originally from Cuba. He would think he had died and gone to heaven if he had that Olds Delta 88 (although Chevys are still his favorite).

  5. I didn't get a license until I was twenty-three. Balder Half had manuals (I think that's what they call stick shift cars) and he could never teach me how to drive one. Ironically, my mother taught him. So my first car was a 1979 brand new Impala station wagon. Hey we had two kids! Had that thing for twenty years. I am still uncomfortable if I have to drive a small car.
