The Saturday Morning Post - Balance

I am back earning a living in my bedroom again.  I can go into the office, but it feels less safe than it did, and when I get there, there is no one around. A lot of people are in this position, or should be.  The challenge for me with work from home (WFH - it has become such a part of our culture that we even have an acronym for it) is balancing.  For me this is harder at this time of the year when it is cold, and often wet, and getting out for a walk seems less attractive. If I am not careful I find myself working 10+ hours a day.  I recently went five days without leaving the apartment.  Far too long to be healthy.

I am pretty good about turning off my office computer on the weekends and leaving it off.  But Monday through Friday it is my constant companion, and there are more things that need doing, than will ever be done.  Just reading the tone of this message, I can tell that this is weighing on my psyche.

The more out of balance I am, the harder it is for me to focus and be at my most productive.  I need to work on this.  Sometimes the first step, is acknowledging the need for a second step.

  1. I like that first sentence. It takes me to forbidden places in my mind.

  2. I guess I'm lucky in that my job cannot be done from home. But whatever job I have had, I have always been very good at leaving it at the door when the day is up.

Working from home is oft discussed here. I am firm believer in finish work at a certain time, then just do not read any electronic work communication. Of course that is muddied if you take time during the day for your own activities when you should be working. I suggest don't. You can't if you are in the office.

    1. I encourage flexible hours, my bigger issue is mission creep, I am going to have to start saying no to some things.

  5. I work from home two days a week and set alarms to take a break, take a lunch, take a stroll, or call it quits for the day, lest I lose track of time and never once move from the desk!

  6. I always hated having to WFH, not because I worked too much, but because I worked too little -- so many (much more fun) distractions at home! -- and also because it meant work invaded my private space. I always preferred going to the office, where I could concentrate much better and delineate/compartmentalize my life. Good thing I was retired by the time this pandemic hit. Working at home during it would have driven me utterly, utterly mad.

  7. You certainly aren't the only one. I'm starting to worry that I've fallen into a rut and can't get out.

  8. Jungians are all about balance. If you are out of it, consciously work on getting back into it. It's good on the complexion.

  9. I set alarms on my phone for when to start work, take breaks and lunch, and when my day ends. It helps set parameters when working from home and makes my work day more official and finite.
