The Way We Were Wednesday: Artifacts

This first came into my life, nearly 60 years ago, I know it came from the Kroger store in Lapeer Michigan, I am unsure if my mother or my grandmother bought it. Name mugs were on an end-cap, ground zero for impulse buys and for children to pitch an "I wana" fit.

It is relic, an artifact of my childhood. I remember using it as a child, probably filled with milk (shudder I can't stand the taste of milk.) It is surprising that it survived, but it did.  Using a jewelers loop and looking closely the design and the my name are fused into the glass.  If the design and name were printed on, they would have washed-worn off decades ago.  Quality pays long term rewards.

I found this when I was cleaning out my father's house after his death.  My mother had kept it, hung onto it, not used it. It was a tangible artifact for her, a connection to when she had a house full of young children.  For me it is tangible connection to my childhood, to early memories.

What artifacts do you have around?

  1. Oh dear I have many. Some packed up, but a few are out and about. My one favorite is a little stuffed Woodstock I got one Christmas in my stocking as a wee one.

I have little more than my maternal grandparent's wind up mantle clock. It is nearly 100 years old and still works.

Why is the name David on your mug?

My two decade year old coffee mug sent from Sherwood in England depicting Robin Hood says dishwasher proof. It was not and Robin Hood is barely visible now.

Duh, missed the obvious about why the name David is on your mug.

    2. I looked at a "Glencairn" whiskey tasting glass the other day that was logoed, and it was printed on. $29 and the logo will wash off in a few months.

  5. I have a hand crocheted afghan that my mother made for me so many years ago that I shudder to even utter the number. But it is draped on the back of our sofa so I see it every day. It brings me joy.

  6. I have my Yogi Bear cup from toddlerhood. I am cleaning out my storage closet and just came across it the other day. I believe we obtained it by sending in cereal box tops. Remember when those kinds of offers existed?

  7. The first thing that comes to mind is that I wear my mother's high school class ring. I have my own, but wearing my mother's ring makes me feel somehow close to her.
I see we share a distaste for milk (yuck). I hate it.

  10. I’ve got quite a few that would be meaningless to anyone else. That’s a surprisingly good-quality mug. Any I had of that vintage would definitely have been washed away by now. Sweet of your mother to have saved it.
