The Way We Wednesday - Yearbook Geek

In high school, I was a yearbook geek.  I spent three years as a staff photographer on the yearbook team.  It had some nice perks, getting to go out and take add photos, getting into the occasional football game or school event.  I enjoyed it.  I have the books I contributed to.  The individual photos are not credited, but I can identify some of the one's I took.  Interestingly one of the photos Michigan yearbook, was taken in my bedroom in Florida.

I continue to be a yearbook geek.  Back in 2011 we spent a week in Normandy, and I wanted to share the photos with a couple of people so I went online and created a book.  I have done several since then, my 2020 yearbook has been printed and is on it's way.  There are several services that do this.  I have used Shutterfly.  The interfaces can be a little bit of a pain, especially if you only use them once a year or so.  But you get the hang of it.  The books are a little expensive, a couple of times a year they have a half price sale.

Were you, or are you a yearbook geek?

  1. I don't know I'd say a geek, but I did have three of four of my yearbooks in high school. I was more so in my clubs....KEY club B.E.S.T club, art club and French Club. But these are cool ideas. I once saw a service that could covert blogs into hard back books. A friend had it done...it was gorgeous.

    1. Converting my blog to a book, would they fix all of my typos?

  2. I never worked on the Yearbook Committee in high school. I tried to make one of those photo books for my Mom when she was in the nursing home but the software was just too frustrating and hard to use, so I abandoned the attempt.

    1. They could be easier, I had to upload the photos twice for my most recent, all 90 of them.

    2. Oh, I forgot -- I DID do the cover art for a yearbook one year -- it was a silhouette of a young kid going in one door and coming out another door as a graduate. Thanks for jogging my memory. Gawd, that was SO long ago!

    1. It was one of the few fun things about high school for me, not a good time in my life.

    3. J's high school closed and was torn down last summer, we stopped and took pictures. My HS never asked for money (public schools.)

  4. Nope. I have only two of my four high school yearbooks, and neither one is from my senior year. I guess that clinches it.

    1. By the way, a very good friend of mine did one of those Shutterfly books for her husband's 80th birthday this year. It was a gorgeous retrospective of the people that came in and out of his life over the years. Very well done. So I can imagine how nice yours are.

    2. The 2020 one arrived yesterday, the printing is wonderful. The senior year book is a challenge, either it goes to the printer in March, or it does not come back until after you have headed off for summer jobs and or college.

While I liked our school yearbooks, I was never involved with them. I wonder what happened to my old school yearbooks.

  6. I was art editor of my junior high and senior high yearbooks, but I wasn't a yearbook geek. I worked hard to develop a hippie artist persona through those years. But I love your travel yearbooks. What a brilliant idea! I know others who have produced books that way and the quality is excellent... especially, I'm sure, with photos like yours.

  7. When Kodak was in business, I used to order photo books from them all the time. I have about 10 of them now. When they went out of the photo book business, they transferred my photos to Shutterfly but I didn't have a good experience with them so I haven't ordered any since. I'm toying with the idea of using a company called Blurb. It's been recommended to me.

    1. Apple periodically asks me if I want to create a photo book, but I have not tried it. Shutterfly can be quirky, I have one book with no cover images. Let us know if you find other publishers that are easy to work with and deliver good results.

  8. I never was but my mother thought them very important. She got them for me when I did not care to do so. Now, I have them thanks to her industry. I am grateful to have these gems.
