The Remodel

Over ten years ago, when I first moved into the condo, I posted that I needed to remodel two bathrooms and the kitchen.  Jay's bathroom was done a few months ago, the replacement of my bathroom started this week.  Here are a few before pictures and progress from day one. The counter was low, I am slightly above average height for a man, and there is a section of my spine that no longer bends.  So new taller cabinets are being installed (ahh!) My least favorite fixture in the original bath was the fiberglass tub-shower.  It was ugly and flexed under my feet.  It is being replaced with a walk in shower, built on a Kohler enameled cast iron shower base.  I had debated for a decade doing a traditional shower, we are on the third floor, if the shower leaked, I'd have a couple of floors below me to leak into.  When we went to look at fixtures and tile and I saw the cast iron shower pan, it was love at first sight.  Unless someone drops a sledge hammer on it, it will outlast us all and NEVER leak.  On the first day, the demo was completed and the shower base installed.  Great progress.

Day two, the new plumbing was installed in the wall, the new backer and waterproof membrane installed.

Day Three, I am in Love.

  2. I like where this is going already. Is that like a slate tile? Very nice and so non traditional.

    1. It is a ceramic tile, that looks like stone. There are glass doors to go in. It is different, and what I wanted. I struggled with design that would be easy to sell, and what I wanted. I finally decided I am likely to live here the rest of my life, I did what I wanted rather than something more traditional.

I can't wait to see the finished product. My you have a lot of make up on your vanity unit 😜 Is that a hint of a plumber's crack I can see? Looks like he could be a bit interesting.

    1. The trays were packed up to go to the other bathroom by the time I took the pictures. This is the second bathroom "Chavo" has done for us, this time I am home to watch and take pictures.

    1. He is working on drywall, and getting ready to set the cabinets, I have not seen the cabinets yet, cherry with a very dark stain, and a light stone countertop.

  7. I jealous. Much nicer than my walk-in-shower that replaced our shower/tub.

    1. I was fortunate to be able to buy what I wanted, and the contractor had some wonderful options.

  8. I wasn't sure what I was looking at and couldn't figure out why you were in love, at first. Then I realized that last picture was tile and not a backing of some sort. My bad. It's a little too dark for my taste, but it ain't my shower, is it? Diversity makes the world go round. I'm glad you're happy. I also agree that the original tub thingy was quite ugly. Been there, done that.

    1. Jay's bathroom is the almost white potty palace, mine is dark and moody.
